Lockheed not full of ‘ignoramuses’

Roger Hines column “Let’s hear it for the Ignoramuses” Dec. 28, suggests that Lockheed Martin is in fear of the gay community because of their policies against discrimination. Perhaps Lockheed Martin is simply trying to do the right thing, responding to discrimination even as they did in the civil rights era.

When I was employed in the early sixties at Lockheed, I was amazed to find no segregated rest rooms, water fountains or lunch facilities that I had grown to expect as a matter of everyday life in Georgia. Everyone was treated equally in an integrated environment that I had not experienced. For the first time. I could associate with African-Americans and found that, except for color, they were pretty much just like me. Credit for this should go to a forward thinking Human Resources Director (once featured in the MDJ) who was determined not to yield to regional bigotry and racism and to fully integrate Lockheed’s work force.

After retiring with more than 40 years’ service, I am glad to say that Lockheed Martin still upholds that standard and does not support discrimination of any kind.

Mr. Young, I believe Mr. Hines was employing irony. He suggested those who support Phil Robertson's views are the "ignoramuses" and those of us who believe in equality, justice, living and let live, and judging not lest we be judged are "elitists." I think his point was America is made up of more "ignoramuses" than "elitists." I wrote two blogs on this if you'd care to read them. Kevin Foley.

@Dave; Just how long did it take you to understand that "they were just like me"?
