MARIETTA — Two west Cobb homes were thought to have been hit by lightning Sunday morning, causing minor damage, said Denell Lee Boyd, a spokeswoman for the Cobb County Fire Department.

At about 8 a.m., lightning hit a hole in the front door at of a home on Benbrooke Lane in Acworth, and started a small fire, which was out by the time the fire department arrived, Boyd said. Firefighters covered the hole with a tarp. No injuries were reported, but Boyd said the family was evacuated when firefighters arrived.

Just a few minutes later, at 8:16 a.m., the fire officials were called to Fernstone Drive in Acworth after lightning struck a house and generated smoke in the attic, Boyd said. The family was evacuated, and there was some damage to the home, but Boyd could not elaborate Sunday.

No injuries were reported, he added.
