KENNESAW — Police confirmed Saturday afternoon a woman pulled from her bedroom engulfed in flames Friday had killed herself after setting the home on fire.

Velina Hill, 54, of Kennesaw, shot herself while in her two-story home on Memorial Parkway, near Cobb Parkway and Jim Owens Road, said Cobb Police spokesman Sgt. Dana Pierce.

A neighbor called the Cobb Fire Department at 12:22 p.m. Friday to report flames coming from the garage.

“We got there five minutes after we got the call, and the whole right side of the house where the garage was pretty much fully engulfed,” Boyd said. “It was pretty dangerous for our firefighters to go in initially because the floor on that side of the house had basically collapsed, so it was very tedious doing a search and rescue until we found her,” said Cobb Fire spokeswoman Denell Boyd.

Boyd said the woman’s husband was called from work to come to the house. A dog found in the house was also dead.

“She’s had a rough time the last year, from what I understand; she lost her son,” Boyd said.
