During the multiple town hall meetings held last month by the various Cobb County Commissioners on the proposed move of the Braves to Cobb, I can’t tell you how many times I heard Chairman Tim Lee and the other commissioners basically say the Cobb County School System’s money problems were not their problem — it’s a school board problem. Like Pontius Pilate, Mr. Lee and the BOC declared their hands clean of that mess.
Really, don’t all of the commissioners live in Cobb? Doesn’t that make it a problem for everyone since we’re all residents and taxpayers of the county? What good is a shiny new billion dollar stadium on the hill if the school system is broke and chasing Clayton and DeKalb counties for the bottom rung of the education ladder?
Also, here’s a news nugget for Tim Lee and the BOC. Families don’t move to Cobb so they can go to a Brave’s game, but they do move here so their children can go to excellent public schools, get a quality education, and feel safe and secure in their homes.
So instead of passing out a half-billion dollars of publicly funded corporate welfare to Liberty Media who, which is worth over $17 billion so it can build a new playground for their millionaire employees, let’s use our scarce resources to improve our education system and public safety departments. I’ve heard that the Cobb police force is understaffed by about 80 officers. That’s a much better investment that has a tangible return on investment we can believe in.
Lastly, I want to express my gratitude to Commissioner Lisa Cupid for following her heart and not drinking Tim Lee’s magic “Cobb Way” potion of going along to get along. At least one commissioner had the fortitude and audacity to do so.
