Leadership Georgia Foundation Inc. launched its statewide leadership program with backing from the Georgia Chamber of Commerce in 1972.
Each year, 60 hand-selected leaders and their spouses are accepted into the LGA and five locations are selected to visit, including rural areas, big cities and suburban areas.
This year, the final stop for the 2013 class is Marietta, which is a thrill for program chairwoman and organizer Jennings Walsh of Marietta, who was part of the 2012 class.
The theme for the Marietta program is “Impact,” which Walsh said includes the city’s challenges, successes and unique assets.
“Our purpose is to show how the city of Marietta is making an impact on the state of Georgia and the community,” Walsh said.
The 2013 LGA class arrived late Thursday afternoon and will be in Marietta through Saturday, but the events attended by the group are private and closed to the media.
The LGA is funded by endowments, including large donations of $25,000 or more from individuals and corporations, which include giants such as AT&T, Bank of America, Coca-Cola Co. and Georgia Power Co.
On Thursday afternoon, the 2013 class was greeted by former Gov. Roy Barnes at his home off Whitlock Avenue, where Mayor Steve Tumlin, an LGA alum, addressed the group.
That evening, the 60 new members and their spouses gathered at the Mansour Center, on the corner of Roswell Street and Cobb Parkway, for a keynote address by LGA alum and Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed.
Today, the 2013 LGA class will tour Lockheed Martin’s Marietta plant and WellStar Kennestone Hospital, before heading to the Cobb County Juvenile Court.
Judge Juanita Stedman will present information about a voluntarily residential treatment program she started in 2005 and graduates from the program will speak about their experiences.
The class will also be exposed to the art and culinary life of Marietta, with tours of Alton Brown’s Food Network Studio, the Marietta Museum of History and the new Marietta High School Performing Arts Center.
