At Thursday’s Board of Aldermen meeting, the board unanimously approved the construction of a 10,505-square-foot retail center and restaurant just off Cobb Parkway NW, in the Acworth Crossing Shopping Center.
The building will add four new stores to the already busy retail area, where the city’s Home Depot, Chili’s and PetSmart locations are, said Brandon Douglas, the assistant city manager.
Martin’s Bar-B-Que Joint, a Tennessee barbecue chain with a shop in West Virginia, will open its first Georgia location in Acworth, Allegood said.
A Vitamin Shoppe has also committed to leasing a shop in the center, Douglas said.
Construction is expected to begin within the next 90 days, Allegood predicted. He said he was confident that once construction was complete, the remaining two shops would be leased within 30 days.
Acworth already has three barbecue restaurants — JD’s Bar-B-Que on Main Street, Bar-B-Cutie near the intersection of Highway 41 and Mars Hill Road, and Zeigler’s BBQ and Catering across the street, said Douglas.
Each restaurant has its own distinct menus and flavors, he said, adding that he is excited there will be a new recipe to try.

The board also unanimously approved to start the initial planning and designing of the city’s court and jail complex at 4400 Acworth Industrial Drive.
The building now holds the city’s police department, court system and jail, and is crowded with city employees, Allegood has said.
The city began construction last month on a new police station next door to the building, and once construction is complete, the current station will be gutted and redesigned, Douglas said.
In a 4-0 vote Thursday night, with Alderman Tim Richardson absent, the city approved hiring Croft and Associates, an architecture and engineering firm in Kennesaw, to begin planning what the new court and jail will look like, so there will be little time spent between projects, Douglas said.
Todd Klingman, the head of school at North Cobb Christian School, spoke to the board at its work session Nov. 4 and presented a blueprint of the school’s proposed five-year plan, which is planning to expand its 40 acres within the next few years, Allegood said.
The school, off Lakewood Drive and Old US Highway 41, had about 1,800 students enrolled in the 2011-12 school year, according its website.
Within the next few years, the school hopes to construct a new entrance to the school off Nance Road.
The also plan to purchase property to construct new sports fields and facilities by the 2018-19 school year, Douglas said.
The board will meet again for a work session Monday, Nov. 18 at 6:30 p.m. at City Hall, 4415 Senator Russell Ave. in Acworth.
