New restaurant offers Southern fare

Golden Biscuits Southern Cooking, owned by three army veterans, is earning its stars serving up traditional Southern fare.

“Our food has that added flavor that you wouldn’t get anywhere but in the South,” said Trisha Hernandez, who owns the restaurant with her brother, Julian Graham, and husband, Avi, an audio visual technician for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Avi served 10 years in the Army and as a U.S. government contractor for two years in Iraq.

“Our specialty items are biscuits. In the morning we do buttermilk, and in the afternoon when we move into lunch we do garlic biscuits,” said Hernandez, who is a project manager for a software company. She served four years in the U.S. Army, five years in Kosovo/Bosnia and as a U.S. government contractor for six years in Iraq.

Julian, “the hands behind the greatness” of the restaurant, served two years in the U.S. Army as a food service specialist and over six years as a manager for Bojangles. “Julian proposed this great idea to open a small, mom-n-pop restaurant here in the Atlanta area,” said Hernandez, a Hiram resident.

Open for breakfast and lunch, she recommends either the sausage biscuit or any of the three-meat burritos for breakfast. The lunch menu features traditional Southern favorites like fried chicken, fried catfish, fried pork chops, greens, mashed potatoes, corn, dirty rice and mac-n-cheese.

Platters at Golden Biscuits are less than $6 and include meat, two side items and biscuit. “It’s really affordable,” Hernandez said.

“We just give you that home cooking that we all love in the South that takes too much energy for you to cook it every day,” she said.

Though none of the owners hail from the South, they have an appreciation of all things Southern and bring more to the table than just good food. “We have set the ambience inside the restaurant to be a home-type feel, very comfortable, very relaxing but at the same upbeat to reflect our personalities,” Hernandez said.

Opened Oct. 5, the restaurant already has a following. “What has really drawn people from the community to us is our personalities. We talk to people. We remember their stories. When they come back it’s like we’re old friends. I think that’s important to them. They’re not just a number. They really do mean something to us,” she said.

“Although we’re not from Cobb County, we’re not from Powder Springs … because of our business, we have embedded ourselves and become a part of the community. We’re very supportive of military personnel, government personnel. Not only are we veterans, we continue to be very patriotic and supportive of our military,” Hernandez said.

Golden Biscuits Southern Cooking is at 4148 Marietta St., Suite 200, in Powder Springs. The restaurant is open weekdays except Tuesday from 6 a.m. to 3 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Call (404) 404-382-9032.
