MARIETTA — Weekend drivers who frequent North Marietta Parkway in Marietta are in for a headache over the next month.

The Georgia Department of Transportation is closing North Marietta Parkway between U.S. 41 and Wallace Road over the next five weekends for concrete repairs.

Ramps from Interstate 75 both northbound and southbound off North Marietta Parkway will also be closed.

“The inconvenience to drivers is unfortunate but we appreciate the Georgia DOT maintaining our state roadways,” said Marietta Councilman Johnny Sinclair. “I hope drivers make alternate plans.”

Mark McKinnon, GDOT spokesman, says the department knows it will cause motorists trouble and is asking Cobb drivers to take their time and plan alternate routes.

“We do expect delays on the interstate and we expect delays on a lot of the surface streets,” McKinnon said. “It’s going to be very difficult for motorists in the area and we’re aware of that.”

Concrete slabs in that area are in “dire need” of replacement, he said, and it would take twice as long to complete the repairs if the roads weren’t shut down.

“It’s so much work to be done we just felt like the safest and most efficient way to get it done would be to just close that section of the road and knock it out,” McKinnon said.

Unrelated concrete work will close some left lanes on I-75 from Chastain Road to Ga. Route 5 from 9 p.m. and 5 a.m. this weekend. That construction isn’t expected to last past this weekend.
