Prep Roundup: Walker sets up bid for area title

Walker beat Darlington (25-14, 25-17) and Mount Paran Christian (18-25, 25-18, 25-21) on Tuesday and advanced into Thursday’s championship round of the Area 4A tournament.

Walker (30-9) will await the winner of the losers’ bracket.

The Lady Wolverines made errors early in their match with Mount Paran, while the Lady Eagles carried momentum over from their three-set win over Gordon Lee. But once Walker settled, it had better ball control. It also served more aggressively in the second and third sets.

Brooke Warner had 37 kills, 12 digs and three blocks to lead Walker. Sasha Fazylov had 19 kills and 20 digs, while Jordan Tasman finished with 12 digs and five aces. Anna Chocallo and Emma Graham each had 19 digs.

Mount Paran falls into losers’ bracket: After beginning the Area 4A tournament with a pair of wins, the Lady Eagles were knocked down by host Walker.

After third-seeded Mount Paran beat Whitefield Academy (28-26, 25-12) and Gordon Lee (20-25, 25-10, 25-21), it won the first set with Walker, only to lose the next two (18-25, 25-18, 25-21).

The Lady Eagles (34-14) are still alive, however, and will resume the double-elimination tournament Thursday against the winner of another losers’ bracket match between Darlington and Christian Heritage.

Melissa Morris led Mount Paran with 38 kills, 18 digs and 11 aces. Caroline Cook had 21 kills and three blocks, while Sarah Ramstack had 18 kills and 23 digs.

Sydney Murphy finished with 71 assists, and Asher Ward had 28 digs.

North Cobb splits tri-match: The Lady Warriors beat Sonoraville in three sets (25-15, 23-25, 25-15) before falling to Walton (25-19, 25-17) on senior night.

Caitlyn Woodruff led the seniors with 11 kills. Madi Dukes added five kills and Tate Pember, finished with 23 digs and two assists.

Other top finishers included Savana Gonzales, who led the team with 17 kills. Abby Miller contributed 12 kills, 12 digs and 2½ blocks, while Taylor Parrish had 44 assists.

North Cobb wrapped up the regular season with a 35-14 record and will begin play in the Area 3AAAAAA tournament Thursday at Hillgrove.

Hillgrove sweeps final tri-match: The Lady Hawks faced a pair of Class AAAAA programs, beating Creekview (25-21, 25-18) and Allatoona (23-25, 25-20, 25-20) to close out the regular season.

Chioma Okonkwo had 18 kills and three aces on the night, while Mackenzie Engram added 15 kills. Janna Jernigan finished with 12 kills, five aces and six digs, and Myah Martin fueled the offense with her 46 assists.

Defensively, Maddie Johnson had a team-best 18 digs, also contributing three aces.

Hillgrove (20-17) will open the Area 3AAAAAA tournament Thursday as the No. 3 seed, hosting sixth-seeded Campbell.

Dominion Christian 3, Atlanta Girls 0: Sabrina Johnston finished with nine kills as the Lady Knights won 25-22, 25-21, 26-24.

Lucy Niverson added 14 assists, while Ashlyn Ross had 15 digs.

SOFTBALL

Pope 9, North Springs 1 (5 inn.):
Lyndsey Monkiewicz forced in a run with a bases-loaded walk in the fifth inning, bringing to a close the Lady Greyhounds’ win on the opening day of the Region 7AAAAA tournament at the Al Bishop Softball Complex.

It was Monkiewicz’s second RBI of the day, and it helped third-seeded Pope (21-8) advance to a game today with sixth-seeded Forsyth Central.

Ellyn Strother was 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI, while Katie Deady had two RBIs. Sydney Segers also drove in a run with a double.

Kelly Barnhill (7-0) struck out 10 and held North Springs to a hit and two walks.

South Cobb 3, Marietta 2: The Lady Eagles scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to win an elimination game of the Region 4AAAAAA tournament at North Cobb.

Marietta scored twice in the top of the first and held the lead until South Cobb’s rally.

Dezirae Rhodes hit a one-out double to center field and was replaced by pinch-runner Kayla Leatherwood. Tyonna Williams’ two-out walk was followed by Stephanie Cantrell’s infield single, which loaded the bases.

Kierra Rozier then hit a two-out, two-strike single to right to scored Leatherwood and Williams for the tying runs. Cantrell scored the winning run on a throwing error to first during Emily Cargle’s at-bat.

Brittney Rhodes earned her 21st victory after allowed two unearned runs on eight hits in seven innings.

Dezirae Rhodes had two doubles for South Cobb (23-8), and Rozier had two singles.

Liz Osburn batted 2-for-4 with am RBI for Marietta.

Taylor Hartenbach gave up three runs — two earned — and struck out five in 6 2/3 innings.

South Cobb will face either McEachern or Campbell today at Harrison.

Mount Paran Christian 5, Mount Zion-Carroll 0: The Lady Eagles won their opening-round Region 6A tournament game at Joe Cowan Park in Cartersville.

Mount Paran got on the board with two runs in the second inning and added three more in the fifth to pull away.

Mount Paran won the game with just five hits and took advantage of three Mount Zion errors in the second.

Four of the Lady Eagles’ five hits came in the fifth. Emily Harrell’s two-run single broke the game open.

Harrell also pitched all seven innings, giving up just four hits and had no walks.

Mount Paran (9-12-1) will play Trion today in the second round.

Late Monday

Harrison 8, McEachern 0 (6 inn):
The Lady Hoyas won convincingly in the opening round of the Region 4AAAAAA tournament.

Harrison scored two runs in the second inning, then added three in the sixth to pull away.

Mikenzie Vaughn was 2-for-2 with a double and three RBIs and also executed two successful suicide squeezes.

Brooke Taylor was 4-for-4 with two runs scored, while Emily Stallings was 2-for-3 with two RBIs and two runs scored and a walk.

Emily Kachel pitched six no-hit innings. She struck out 12 and only walked two.

Harrison will host North Cobb today as the teams continue to vie for the No. 3 and No. 4 seeds into the state playoffs.

North Cobb 8, South Cobb 0 (6 inn): The Lady Warriors scored three runs in the first inning and five in the sixth to pull away from the Lady Eagles in a Region 4AAAAAA tournament game.

Casey Page was 3-for-3 with two runs scored and a sacrifice fly, Kayla Trumbull was 2-for-4 with two RBIs and Jordan Lewis was 2-for-4 with two RBIs and a double.

Sarah Merced was 2-for-2 and a run scored.

Olivia Mould gave up three hits and had six strikeouts to get the win for North Cobb (21-8).
