What will she grow up thinking about her gov’t?

Dear Editor:

Yesterday I watched a drama unfold in Washington, D.C., which could happen in no other place in the United States. A woman alone, with her young child in the back seat, who was trying to find her way back to her home in Connecticut, committed the cardinal sin of becoming lost in Washington, D.C.

Now this, in itself, is not too unusual, because anyone who has spent much time in Washington, D.C., when in session, knows that most of those who work there have been lost for most of their lives.

Now, I can guarantee you that you will hear many stories in the next few weeks about how this drama could have happened, the most prevalent of which will be that this was a mentally deranged woman, bent on getting even with someone for everything that had befallen her, leaving five or six cops who surrounded her stopped car no alternative but to shoot and kill her on the spot. All of this with no gun and her young child in the back seat.

I can present a different scenario.

A scenario that you will never hear from those who participated in the event or those who report endlessly on its happening. A young woman was in the midst of a long trip, trying to find her way back to Connecticut when she became lost in Washington. Seeing the police guarding the barricade, she thought it would be a good idea to stop and ask them how to get back on the highway to her home.

When she tried to stop to ask her question, she accidently bumped one of the barricades and those police guards immediately drew their guns and surrounded the front of her car. Her only thought then was that she was about to become separated from her child, so she turned the car, hit the gas pedal and fled the scene, with every un-furloughed cop in Washington following her. What else was a mother to do? When those following cops finally got her car boxed in and surrounded and cops with guns pointed surrounding her car, she was ordered to get out of her car. When she refused to do so, the cop on the driver’s side simply shot her through the glass and killed her. After all, she could have had a bomb strapped to her body, in a car, several blocks from everything, with no gun and her child in the back seat. Bouh Rah!

What you will hear in future weeks will be all of the multimillionaire playboys, who sit in their cushioned seats playing games on their laptops while others drone on endlessly, issuing statements about how those on the front lines have again done a wonderful job and another dangerous individual has been removed from their playground with minimal damage. The truth will never see the light of day in the media, because they will have been told to shut up if they ever hope to be invited to attend another press briefing.

So what to do? Perhaps the best thing that could be done is to build a continuous 12-foot spike fence around the governing sections of Washington, D.C., with sharply pointed tops and one locked and guarded gate, with wide paving around the outside, so visitors can watch their government in action safely, as those on the front line go inside to feed those who play there. In doing so, we will have enclosed the most dangerous acreage in our country and will have protected we normal citizens from needless “accidental” death and destruction.

The fact that another innocent mother has died and another child has lost a mother will become another insignificant and forgotten event in this land of the free and the home of the brave. That is, except for an innocent young girl who has lost her mother. I can’t help but wonder what she will grow up thinking of “her government in action” and their “front line of defense.”

Jim, are you serious? If so, I'd love to hear your take on Hitler's excuse for his participation in World War II!

Please, seek help.

I've got some news for you. I visited Germany four times, carrying Marshal Plan goodies to those poor beaten down German civilians. They unloaded the gifts on their end and I spoke excellent German. As I listened to them working on the dock, I learned that a large majority of those beaten down folks thought Hitler was right. I also listened to Sam Zell on CNBC this morning, giving us his belief that the U.S. Government is now dumbing down the American children and indoctrinating them, just like Hitler did to the German children in 1937. I was there as that was happening. I lived through the results, fighting another stupid war in Korea. Where were you then? I've got some further news for you. Whatever you hear about the shooting of mom in D.C., it won't be the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth, so help me God. It will be what they want you to hear. Pay attention. I think we all need help.

You should give serious thought to becoming a fictional author.

Mike,

It's OK! You are probably too young to know what Jim Stoll is talking about. Poor Jim, all that knowledge of life, all that experience and it goes for naught before the eyes of the low historical knowledge of today's callow youth.

You got it. I write a lot about our current government. Everything in Washington, D.C. is fiction. That makes it easy. Doesn't pay well though, at least not on this end.

I am an author of two books and one short story. I'm working on a third, if my government allows me to live long enough to finish it. It' nip and tuck right now. But I write about serious stuff, like what happened to the land that I loved. Old countries are like old soldiers, as MacArthur said: "It just faded away".
