Powder Springs woman dies in wreck

A Powder Springs woman died after driving her car into the opposite lane and colliding with another car at 12:21 p.m. Saturday.

Irene Giannangelo, 72, of Powder Springs, was driving a white 2011 Ford Escape northbound on Mars Hill Road just south of Nichols Road when for unknown reasons she crossed over the double yellow lane lines into the southbound lane, colliding with a white 2006 Mazda MPV driven by Julia Rivera, 31, of Powder Springs, said Cobb Police Officer Mike Bowman.

Giannangelo was transported by ground ambulance to WellStar Kennestone Hospital where she was pronounced dead.

Rivera was also taken to Kennestone and treated for non-life threatening injuries.

Two of three juvenile passengers riding with Rivera were taken by ambulance to Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta Scottish Rite Hospital where they are being treated for non-life threatening injuries. The third juvenile passenger was not injured in the collision and was released to a family member on the scene.

The collision remains under investigation and no charges are expected to be filed, Bowman said.

I bet mandatory relicensing of drivers after age 67 would have prevented this senseless yet all-too-common tragedy.

No charges will be filed when someone allegedly crossed the center line? It seems the Powder Springs DA may be owned by Giannangelo's insurance company who will pay less in absence of a conviction!

Pete, 67 is retirement age, when most people in Georgia stop driving regularly. Driving is a skill. Use it or lose it.

More importantly, though, the huge majority of 67 year olds are retired and have plenty of free time, so 67 is why not age 60 or 55 or 50 or both a driving and road law test every year for EVERY driver, which would be my personal preference. So yeah, why 67. How about everybody every year, written and road testing.

Our cars should actually be inspected annually too like everywhere else does, oh except increasing our safety on the roads via safer cars would decrease the ability of the cops to hassle poor people via pretext stops for a broken whatever wasn't caught at annual inspection time because we don't do annual car inspections here. Why don't we do annual car inspections here? So the cops always have some reason to stop poor people!
