"We're excited about what this project means for south Smyrna," Ward 7 City Councilman Ron Fennel said. "This will bring between 2,000 and 3,000 new residents into the city over time."
The 82-acre tract consists of vacant lots and several commercial buildings. Plans call for a mixed-use development to include 155 single family housing units, 332 townhomes, 165 condos, 200 senior housing units, 850 apartments and 190,000-square-feet of commercial space. The planning commission recommended approval of the project in September; the city council is expected to give its blessing Oct. 21.
"A lot of the land along the river front is in the 100-year flood plain, so it will be left in its natural state," Fennel said. "We're excited about the potential to add some additional recreational spaces and parkland to the city."
