Alice Bertha (Curschmann) Van Brink, 83, passed away October 1, 2013 at her Acworth, Georgia home due to complications from Parkinson’s disease. Her suffering has ended, and now she has put out her hand and touched the face of God. A memorial service in Catskill, New York is planned for a date during the week of Thanksgiving. Alice was born in Queens, New York to Christian Henry and Alice Marjorie Bentley Curschmann on November 04, 1929. She attended Andrew Jackson High School, graduating in 1947. She went on to earn Bachelor’s degrees in Education and Music from Queens College. She earned a Master’s in Education from Albany State University in the 1970s.She was a beloved teacher at the three-room Leeds, New York Elementary School, and taught elementary classes in Catskill, Saugerties, Brewster, and Kingston, New York. She was a specialist in teaching remedial reading. Her teaching career, which touched hundreds of lives, spanned from 1955 to 1985. Until the time of her passing, former students were still in touch with her. During her youth, Alice was an acclaimed performer on Long Island, starring in many musicals. She wrote the music for the Leeds Elementary School Song. She was a member of Coach House Players in Kingston, New York in the 1970s. In addition to acting she enjoyed reading, watching movies, traveling, corresponding with loved ones, singing, playing the piano, ballet, and listening to classical music and symphony orchestras. One of her highlights was seeing Johnny Carson in person on The Tonight Show in California. Above all, she loved God, her family and friends, and her country. She had the unique ability to make every person she came in contact with feel loved and valued. Alice will be greatly missed. Alice is preceded in death by her parents, Christian and Alice, a brother, Christian Henry Curschmann, Jr., a niece, Melanie Curschmann, and a nephew, Craig Curschmann. Alice is survived by her sisters Mayrose (Fred, deceased) Roy of Catskill and Edith Susan (Eugene) Ledee-Finnerty of Tampa, Florida; brother Louis Paul (Margaret) Curschmann of Catskill; sons Harry (Leslie) Van Brink III of Palm Coast, Florida and John David (Mary) Van Brink of Acworth; and three grandchildren Justin Van Brink, Lisa (Van Brink) Crowell, and Cassidy Van Brink.
