SAVANNAH, Ga. (AP) — Savannah's film office director has been suspended over complaints regarding the upcoming production of "SpongeBob 2 The Movie."

A city memo accuses Film Services Director Jay Self of failing to properly plan for filming of the movie. It cites complaints about Self's role from local businesses.

The Sept. 23 memo, from Self's boss Joseph Shearouse, was obtained by WTOC-TV.

"This action is as a result of your failure to properly plan and manage the arrangement for the movie 'SpongeBob 2 The Movie,'" Shearouse wrote.

Shearouse said that Self met with him and the city manager on July 17 to discuss upcoming filming for the movie.

"At that time, you assured the City Manager that prior to the arrival of the movie's production team all issues with businesses related to the movie would be resolved," the memo states.

Then, in late August, Shearouse and Self met again.

"At that time I told you your position as Film Services Director was in jeopardy," Shearouse wrote.

After the production team arrived, the mayor and city manager received "numerous" complaints from local businesses, the memo states.

Storefronts along Broughton Street were recently painted to resemble a seaside community in preparation for filming, which is expected to continue through November, The Savannah Morning News reported.

Self is appealing the suspension, which is expected be reviewed this week by City Manager Stephanie Cutter.

Messages left by The Associated Press for Self, the city manager and the city's spokesman were not immediately returned Monday morning.
