Universal background checks needed

DEAR EDITOR:

Sadly, another mass shooting has occurred in Washington, D.C. Innocent lives lost too soon because someone was mad at the world and didn’t want to suffer alone. How about the massacres at Ft. Hood, Sandy Hook Elementary, Columbine H.S. and the movie massacre in Colorado? There are also the single shootings like the man who killed another man over a parking space at the Riverside Apartments here in Cobb recently or the many domestic disputes that occur on a daily basis.

Maybe all of these could have been prevented if the firearms weren’t so easy to obtain.

I don’t understand why the NRA would be against universal background checks if it would give more time for angry perpetrators to think about their actions, and it wouldn’t take away from us lawful citizens from having a weapon for protection in our homes. It could weed out the criminals from other states.

Are background checks going to prevent every violent act? Of course not! But it would help. It is disturbing that some of our legislators are so heavily influenced by the NRA. They shouldn’t have that much influence in policy making. That should be up to the legislators that we vote in office. I don’t know about you, but I don’t like that our nation has been called the most violent industrialized nation in the world.

Let’s please let our legislators know that we agree with universal background checks, to keep us safe, because it is common sense.

There have been over 300 murders in Chicago this year. Kids must pass through safe passage areas on their way to school to avoid the gang wars. Last Thursday, 13 people, including a 3 year old, were shot in a South Side Chicago park.

Chicago has the toughest gun laws in the nation. The Brady Campaign ranks Illinois as the ninth toughest state on guns and President Obama’s former chief of staff is Mayor. Democrat heaven and people are just dying to get out.

The MDJ obviously only printed this letter to showcase the usual ignorance, naivete', and lack of common sense evident in the thinking(?) of the typical anti-gun nut. In their minds, we are always just one more law, one more regulation, one more burden on the honest and law-abiding away from solving any given problem.

The only power the NRA has is in its existence as the very epitome of a grassroots organization that expresses the will of a vast number of Americans. Thankfully, there are still those who value their freedoms more than an illusion of nanny-state safety.

You need facts my dear. Gun violence happens more in places that have banned or outlawed guns. Bad guys don't care about the law, so do you think those bans are going to affect whether they start shooting? Heck no.

Additionally, you insult our intelligence when you put the jihadi Muslim shooter from Ft. Hood in the same category as the other mentally disturbed shooters. Liberal thinkers such as yourself cannot seem to process that jihad is a political/religious fervor that has nothing to do with one's mental state. It's an act of war against America, the west and our religions. Jihad is a Muslim's misguided attempt to assist their pie in the sky 12th Caliphate, to eradicate democracy, Christianity, Judaism and all other religions but their own and die trying. NO gun law in the world is going to prevent acts of jihad and in fact, you better hope YOU are packing if and when they come to OUR mall, demanding the name of Mohammed's mother and murdering you in cold blood if you aren't a Muslim. No gun law could help those in Nairobi last weekend, and disallowing our servicemen from carrying their weapons, even the MPs, is morally wrong.
