Sprayberry got strong performances from quarterback Shane Young and running backs Rakeem Myricks and Shane King. Young rushed for 106 yards, 87 of those yards coming in the first half, while Myricks also rushed for 52 of his 66 yards before halftime, including a 46-yard touchdown run. Myricks also added a 14 yard touchdown run in the second half.
Forsyth Central’s Ryan Hintz scored his second touchdown of the night to cut the Sprayberry lead to 31-21 late in the third quarter, and then the Bulldogs recovered the ensuing onside kick at midfield.
But they were forced the punt after three plays and a mishandled snap allowed the Yellow Jackets’ Jabari Zuniga to recover the ball and return it 25 yards for a touchdown to make the score 38-21.
Myricks then added a 14 yard touchdown run late in the fourth quarter to increase the lead to 24 points.
Sprayberry coach Billy Shackelford said that Myricks has had a good attitude and ran “like a caged animal.”
Forsyth Central’s Sabrien Howard’s 3-yard touchdown run with less than 2 minutes to play ended the scoring. Howard would finish with a game high 149 yards, while Hintz ran for 127 yards and two touchdowns.
“We had good opportunities,” said Forsyth Central coach Shane Williamson. “We was in the ball game at the half. We started off with a turnover, put us in a bad situation and were the type of team right now that can’t overcome mistakes.”
Despite the victory, Sprayberry coach Billy Shackelford feels the team can still improve.
“We’re giving up too many big plays on defense,” Shackelford said. “I’m happy about some things, I’m not happy about other things….I’ll take the victory..”
King added 61 yards rushing and scored two touchdowns on the night and it was his 12-yard score that put Sprayberry up 7-0 in the first quarter.
The Bulldogs tied the game with a 15-yard touchdown run from Hintz after Ryan Mitchell recovered a fumble at midfield and returned it to the Yellow Jackets’ 28 yard line.
Sprayberry responded with 10 unanswered points thanks to Myricks’ 46-yard touchdown run and a 24-yard field goal by Rodrigo Blakenship.
However, the Bulldogs grabbed momentum right before the half with Jeremiah Jones’ 8-yard touchdown catch from Aubrey Blackmon to cut the lead to 17-14 at halftime.
The momentum would be short lived as Hintz fumbled the ball on the first play of the second half and Sprayberry took advantage of the short field. The Yellow Jackets needed only four plays before Young threw a touchdown pass to Jontae Williams put the Yellow Jackets ahead 24-14.
King’s 2-yard touchdown run, his second of the game, gave Sprayberry at 31-14 lead.
