An east Cobb man will spend the rest of his life in prison for killing a woman who had tried to show him kindness while he went through a divorce.

Dennis Robert Bredar, 66, pleaded guilty to malice murder in the September 2012 death of Rhonda Kay Callihan, 49. He had been scheduled to go to trial next week.

Callihan had let Bredar move in with her as a roommate while he was going through a divorce. He had lived next door to Callihan’s home on Jamerson Forest Circle for 25 years.

Assistant District Attorney Joyette Holmes told the court that the arrangement was unsettling to Callihan, who had complained to relatives of Bredar’s drinking and temper.

On the evening of Sept. 6, 2012, Bredar told investigators, he argued with Callihan “over nothing” before he shot her several times with a .357 revolver.

After killing her, Bredar called 911 and waited for police to arrive. He was taken into custody and has remained at the Cobb Jail without bond.

Several relatives and friends of Callihan attended Tuesday’s hearing before Cobb Superior Court Judge Reuben Green. Callihan’s mother and a sister addressed the court, describing her as a well-loved mother of two young boys.

“This man has taken a piece of my heart that can never be replaced,” her mother said. “I hope every night, when he goes to sleep, he can see her face when he pulled that trigger.”

After entering his plea and being sentenced to life, Bredar apologized “for all the grief this has caused.”

Callihan left behind two sons, ages 13 and 10.
