MARIETTA — Cobb Sheriff Neil Warren underwent surgery for a fractured vertebrae Monday morning, an injury he sustained in a Thursday car accident on Interstate 75.

Warren, 66, has been in good spirits, laughing with visitors to his room at Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta, and is expected to have a quick recovery, said Nancy Bodiford, executive assistant to Warren.

Though he has a fractured vertebrae, Bodiford said Warren is not paralyzed.

A post on the sheriff’s Facebook page by his daughter, Liz, said, “He is alert and in good spirits, but currently unable to respond to (Facebook) messages. He appreciates each one.”

Chief Deputy Milton Beck was driving Warren on Thursday on 1-75 to the state Capitol for the swearing-in ceremony of Georgia Supreme Court Justice Harris Hines as the court’s new presiding justice.

While driving in the HOV lane, 40-year-old Jeffrey Ronald Collins of Loganville lost control of his Ford pickup truck pulling a trailer while merging onto I-75 south of the Northside Drive exit, striking the white sport-utility vehicle driven by Beck.

The truck crossed the road coming from the right lane and hit the back end of the sheriff’s car causing it to flip over on the interstate.

Collins has been charged with failure to maintain lane.

Beck, Collins and his passenger, Timothy Lamont Johnson, 48, from Lithonia, were not seriously injured.
