Congratulations to Leona Wollesen who celebrated her 93rd birthday.

More than 20 years ago as an employee, Leona co-founded and still chairs the original Blue Cross/Blue Shield of Georgia Retiree Association (The Ambassadors). The group evolved to include all the BCBS retirees and executive officers. One of the first in the country and continuing as the only one existing within the entire BCBSD, WellPoint (one of largest health care insurance systems nationwide) organizations.

After 55 consecutive years of full time employment, the last 30 with BCBS of Georgia, Leona is one of only a few women in Georgia and the entire nation over 90 years old still actively heading and operating a major organization.

Leona celebrated her birthday with two-day events over the weekend of Aug. 3. The first part was being joined with friends and relatives for a lawn picnic at the Happy Birthday Smyrna event Saturday evening on the Smyrna Village Green.

On Sunday, there was annual open house celebration at her home with family, friends and relatives. Among the local area attendees was Mary Louise Hammond along with out-of-town attendees Bonnie and Vernon Langford of St. Simon’s Island (Leona’s daughter and son-in-law); granddaughter Mendie Langford of Woodstock; grandson Scott Langford formerly of Douglasville (now residing in Tuscaloosa, Ala.); granddaughter Terri Langford Martin, husband Pat, and children, Emily; also great grandson, Cooper (age 4) all of Clarksville, Tenn.; and son, Woody Wollesen, formerly of Dickerson, Md., currently relocating in retirement to Georgia.
