Hankerson’s fate up to chairman, not commission

DEAR EDITOR:

I read with interest your Around Town segment on Saturday concerning the future of David Hankerson as Cobb County manager. The issue is very simple to understand.

Local legislation, defining the Cobb Commission chairman’s role, is very clear on two issues: 1. the chairman is responsible for the budget and 2. the chairman appoints the county manager and all department heads, with the approval of the district commissioners.

If Tim Lee does not reappoint David Hankerson in January, Cobb County will have a new county manager and there is nothing the District Commissioners can do about it. It’s that simple! It is totally the chairman’s responsibility.

I am also wondering why the MDJ is not more concerned about the “continuing” transit proposals and the thousands of dollars being spent on “studies.” Cobb’s voters were very clear in last year’s primary and said NO to the TSPLOST proposal by a 69 percent to 31 percent referendum vote.

The transit proposals do not work, they are not affordable and the voters don’t want them. The two CIDs, Chamber of Commerce and the city of Atlanta continue to control the transit agenda in Cobb County, and it just doesn’t work.

What is it going to take to get Tim Lee’s attention on this issue?

Chairman Lee has left those decisions to Hankerson, when you mention the department heads, and Mr. Hankerson has let experience walk out the door time and time again. He will NOT make a decision on Hankerson because he is afraid of Hankerson. The whole "Where's Willie" fiasco is a case in point. The decision was made NOT to start Willie but Timmy boy jumped the gun when confronted by the MDJ. If it can't be done behind the scenes, then Tim will not handle it.

I sure hope they get rid of Hankerson. they can clean out Capt. Van hoozer and Lt. Van Ness at CCPD as well. There is a lot of house cleaning that needs to happen at the county. It is moving from a well run county in the past to a chicago like big city bureacracy / police state that is failing and cant keep its finances in order. Where is Tim Lee from originally ? go figure......

Maybe the voters will get a clue and take the first step and get rid of Lee. Bob ott can go as well - he has been a part of the slow slide downward. when are some real business men going to step up and run and when will the community recognize the difference?
