Police in Gwinnett County are trying to figure out who shot and killed a Marietta man and injured a Powder Springs man Monday morning at an apartment complex near Norcross.
According to a release from Gwinnett County Police, Thomas Smith of Powder Springs and Steven Carden of Marietta, both 28-year-old men, were walking through the Celadon Apartment complex on South Norcross Tucker Road around 7:10 a.m. when Carden was shot and Smith was hit over the head with an unknown object.
Corp. Edwin Ritter with Gwinnett Police said that when officers arrived on scene, Carden was lying on the ground dead with a gunshot wound in front of building F at the complex. He declined to say where on the body Carden was shot or what type of gun was used.
“(Smith) was hit over the head with something but we are not sure what it was,” Ritter said.
He was taken to Gwinnett Medical Center in Lawrenceville with a blunt force trauma injury to the head and Ritter said Smith was released from the hospital that same day.
Investigators with the department’s homicide unit have interviewed Smith and other potential witnesses on scene for additional information but all they know at this time is that Smith and Carden were walking through the complex, had a brief conversation with two black males on the property and shortly thereafter were shot and injured.
“We have no direct eyewitnesses to the homicide itself,” Ritter said. “Everything is very vague right now, even the information we’re getting from (Smith).”
Ritter said detectives aren’t sure why Carden and Smith were at the complex Monday morning, but are trying to gather that information as well.
