DEAR EDITOR:

Re: Yarbrough column “Marietta Visitors’ Bureau’s next director needs media relations moxie” July 12

Mr. Yarbrough, you stated there’s never been a single contact to you initiated by the MVB, but articles and ads are consistently appearing in the Marietta Daily Journal. Are you insecure because they choose to communicate with another newspaper employee?

Your paragraph regarding Art Walk, Christmas Pilgrimage and Taste of Marietta is confusing. Are you saying no one from the Marietta Visitors Bureau has promoted these events? Do you have a subscription to the MDJ? If not, please borrow from your neighbors; you’re sure to find something regarding the MVB.

What is this ‘media relations moxie’ mumbo-jumbo! The MVB must be doing something right because every Art Walk, festival, Taste, parade, outdoor concert and Pilgrimage I ever attended, I discovered through the newspaper, a magazine, radio, Facebook and friends and neighbors. They have a nice website and now have a wonderful app for your phone.

Regarding your statement on a replacement for Director Theresa Jenkins, when the candidate is qualified, what is wrong with promoting from within? That is a standard business practice.

You failed to mention what the $197,000 grant the Marietta Visitors Bureau received must cover, which is salaries, rent, utilities, advertising, printing, office supplies, computers, continuing education and association fees. Many of us who read the MDJ are (or have been) business owners, so we know the high cost of running any successful business. It’s never easy and there’s never enough money.

Your article is all about the Marietta Visitors Bureau not reaching out to you. It’s all about YOU! If you are so unhappy with how the MVB runs, why didn’t you apply for the job?

Mr. Yarbrough, your “media relations moxie” mumbo-jumbo is insulting to the MVB and to Cobb County residents and business owners! You call this responsible journalism? Give me a break.

And, Regarding Kee Carlisle’s Letter to the Editor “Push Visitors Bureau to do right thing,” published July 16, please tell Mr. Carlisle that Marietta is doing fine! It doesn’t need to be “New and Improved!”

I believe that you missed Mr Yarbrough's point or his satirist style is over your head. As to promoting from within – is that the best fit for the position? Are you familiar with the Peter Principle?

From Late Latin - sarcasm translates to means "to tear flesh, bite the lips in rage, sneer." While this method or "style" of communicating may be effective, it is certainly not "over anyone's head" but perhaps "below their standards." Since it is clear that neither Mr. Yarbrough nor you have the full picture of the mission of the MVB nor the potential candidates strengths and/or weaknesses perhaps some good ole fashioned research and fact checking is in order before you further the flesh tearing of employee's careers in this public format. Constructive input into the process just might have a more positive outcome for everyone - especially visitor's to Marietta and the employees retained to reach out to those tourists.
