Cobb County Transit to hire 3 new employees

MARIETTA — Cobb Community Transit is taking on three new employees in response to an audit that revealed a need for improvement in how the system manages the revenue received through its Breeze card program.

In an attempt to establish better accuracy of the funds received through the card payment system for riders that use CCT, GRTA and MARTA, three employees will be hired.

Cobb County commissioners approved the hiring Tuesday.

The transit system has a fleet of 131 buses and a budget of $18 million. Of that $18 million, 33 percent is funded by passenger fares. The employees will increase staff from six full-time and one part-time employees to nine full-time and one part-time employees.

Because the audit demonstrated a need for better efficiency in monitoring and validating revenues paid to the county in the form of bus fares, the employees will perform administrative duties.

Two positions, an accountant and systems administrator, will be funded through federal grants. Salaries are advertised between $34,777 and $53,995 for the accountant position and $56,596 and $90,563 for the analyst position.

The federal government will pay for half of those positions, with the other half coming from the transit system.

A business analyst position will pay between $59,467 and $95,264 and will be funded by money saved from an unfilled engineering position.

Commission Chairman Tim Lee said the three positions will be to manage “back room” activities and riders shouldn’t notice a change in service.

About 125 drivers employed by Veloia Transportation, which has a contract with the county, operate the bus fleet.

Where are the stories reporting how much DO"T" surface hardening employees are paid? Why no story about the new steamroller or ashphalt truck? Is it because you don't want people to think of the real costs involved in driving and how high the public subsidy is? The heavier the SUV, the fatter the welfare check we all write for it to be driven mindlessly around town. Come on MDJ. Report the REAL waste in transportation. How about each of you journals your personal costs for a year to participate in our transportation system, and then calculated the public subsidy for your daily drive to Fairground and Glover and then back home, and everywhere else? Does anybody at MDJ ride CCT? Make sure to include them along with their public subsidy. I am not a betting type, but I will be the CCT person's public subsidy come in at one-twentieth or LESS than the public subsidy for those who drive, and the personal costs will probably come in around one fiftieth for the CCT user.
