SMYRNA — The man who shot a Cobb County Police Officer in the chest at about 1 a.m. Friday in a Smyrna apartment complex remained on the loose Saturday.

Concord Chase Apartments, at 300 Hurt Road across from Cindy’s Lake, between Austell Road and South Cobb Drive, was swarmed with heavily armed SWAT units as police searched 224 apartments door to door Friday.

Officer Michael Bowman with Cobb Police said there were officers patrolling the area Saturday, but active searches had ended.

By Friday night, Bowman said all leads in the apartment complex had been exhausted and by Saturday there were no new leads in the case.

Police say Officer D. Rogers was patrolling at the complex when he noticed a man standing outside and approached him. When the man ran off, Rogers followed him on foot.

At some point in the chase, police say Rogers was blindsided and shot.

Rogers was protected by a bullet-proof vest and was in good condition recovering at home Friday, Bowman said.

Warning call

Residents were woken at 4 a.m. Friday to a blaring message sent out by the Cobb County 911 center as part of a public safety communications system that notifies residents of emergency situations.

Cobb County used this Code Red Alert for the second time Friday, and set the alert for a one-mile radius of where the shooting occurred, Bowman said.

Bowman said the Code Red Alert works to tell neighbors to stay indoors and report anything suspicious, while also helping to make residents feel safe.

Anyone with information on the shooting or the suspect is asked to call 911 immediately.

A $5,000 reward has been offered for help in capturing the man.

The suspect is described as a black man last seen wearing a white T-shirt and khaki pants. He has low-cut hair with braids.
