Betty and James Nelson Sr. prove that marriage can last! On June 20, the Marietta residents celebrated 60 years of wedded bliss. On June 29, the Nelsons’ children, Mary Nelson Wright and James Nelson Jr., orchestrated a lovely party at their church, Greater Community Church of God in Christ on Roswell Road in Marietta to celebrate their anniversary.

The Nelsons were married in Milledgeville, Betty’s home at the time. James was born in Marietta and attended the Lemon Street School. The couple met through their mothers, who were friends. James was in the service during the Korean War at the time he and Betty married.

Betty retired from Cobb County School System as a lunch manager. She was the first African-American lunchroom manager in the Cobb County School System. James worked at Lockheed in his younger days, but retired as self-employed carpenter. He was one of the first African-Americans that worked at Lockheed.

In addition to two children, the Nelsons have four grandchildren — Melanie Nelson, Edlena Wright, Edward Wright Jr. and Tesia Wright. They have four great-grandchildren — Rhakhiya, Tyshawn, Izaiyah and Alicia Nelson.

Among those celebrating with the Nelsons were: Yvonne and Julius Cawthon, Mellinee and Lander Collins Sr., Carolyn and Willie Davis, Mary E. Dodd, Ruth and Bradley Eppinger, Gloria Eppinger, Christie and Joseph Hicks, Brenetta and Kevin Humphries, Gwen and Joe Mills, Marion and Charles Milton, Noah Rosser and Floyd Tiller.
