I have been appalled at the reaction to Paula Deen’s honest answer to the question of whether or not she has ever used the “N word.” In the South and many other parts of the country during the 1950s and ’60s there were three words to use to name the race — “Negro,” “Colored” or the “N-word.” The N-word was generally only used to describe those who refused to work or were a detriment to the community, and it is still used regularly used in black society and music. A similar description for whites is “cracker” or “white trash,” among others that are currently used and approved.
My reaction to all of the companies (Sears, Penney, Target, Home Depot and Smithfield Foods) that have decided to punish Mrs. Deen is to use other suppliers due to their hypocrisy. If they were to question all of their employees and receive honest answers about the use of the N-word in the past and terminated them on that basis, many stores would close for lack of personnel.
It appears that in this country, freedom of speech no longer exists.
