The class, composed of 19 nominated county employees, chose to renovate an art room at the Cobb Community Service Board, which works with CHOICES 2 Cobb, a program that provides services and activities to adults with disabilities.
The public unveiling of the art room is set for 2 p.m. at the Cobb County Community Service Board at 2051 Greenridge St.
“We built tables, painted the walls, built shelving, supplied the room with art utensils,” said Carla Lario, a Cobb County employee and member of the 2013 EXCEL Class. “Some of the tables weren’t tall enough to fit a wheelchair under it, so we rebuilt those tables so all clients could participate.”
Lario said the class was required to select a charity project that would impact the Cobb County community in a lasting way, and after consulting several nonprofit groups, the class chose to take on the art room renovation.
The 19 class participants raised the funds for the project by reaching out to private donors and businesses. Lario said it was not funded with any taxpayer dollars.
EXCEL Class participants are Cobb County employees and are nominated by their supervisors and approved by the heads of their departments.
EXCEL Class members participate in one annual community service project and also take leadership development courses that focus on topics like teambuilding and effective team management.
Although the county has not had an EXCEL Class for the past several years, Lario said belonging to the 2013 class was a rewarding experience.
“It’s a good opportunity to network with people who work in the county you wouldn’t otherwise work with,” Lario said
