CUMBERLAND — One Atlanta man is dead and another could face charges after a fatal motorcycle accident along Cobb Parkway in the Cumberland Mall area Saturday night.

According to Cobb Police STEP Unit investigators, Marc R. Ullmann, 44, was hit while riding his red and white 2007 Aprilia motorcycle south on Cobb Parkway near Paces Mill Road at about 9 p.m.

As Ullmann approached the intersection, Demond M. Tate, 28, attempted to do a U-turn in his red 2009 Mercedes C300 on Paces Mill Road to go westbound. Police say this caused Ullmann to hit the driver’s side door of Tate’s car, and the biker was ejected from his motorcycle.

Ullmann was taken by ambulance to WellStar Kennestone Hospital in Marietta and pronounced dead.

Tate was taken to the same hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

There were no passengers involved.

Sgt. Dana Pierce could not say what specific injury caused Ullmann’s death, but said that from what investigators told him, the motorcycle was “considerably torn up and he died as a result of the severity of the impact.”

Pierce also could not say exactly what charges Tate faces, but that they would be determined after a state-administered blood test is conducted.

“That is a standard procedure for any serious injury or fatality,” he said. “They probably drew blood from him at the hospital.”

Traffic-related charges will be cited as the investigation continues.

Anyone with information about the crash is asked to call investigators at (770) 499-3987.

There was a lady who hit a rider last year in Marietta doing the same thing, taking a sudden left turn from the far right lane, directly into the path of the motorcycle rider. What an idiot this guy in the Mercedes was. There is no excuse -- throw the book at him

Wake up people, its nice outside and there are a lot of motorcycles on the road. Pay attention, put the cell phone down, lower the volume on your car stereo and look twice.

Oh yeah and don't ride on our butts, we stop faster than a car or truck will.

I could not agree more (scooter rider here)! I saw the aftermath of the accident and it was not a nice sight. Prayers go out to the families of those involved.
