Emily Gaines Phillips, a native of Marietta, passed away Monday, June 17, 2013. Mrs. Phillips, the daughter of James W. Gaines and Mattie Dobbins Gaines was born September 12, 1915, the youngest of seven children. Her ancestors came to Cobb County in the early 1830s. Mrs. Phillips was educated in Marietta schools and graduated from Marietta High School in 1932. Mrs. Phillips was a dedicated member of East Cobb United Methodist Church, serving in various offices over the years. She was also active in the annual Marietta Camp Meeting held each year on Roswell Road. Religious services have been conducted on this site since 1837 and Mrs. Phillips’ Great-grandFather and family attended the first service. Mrs. Phillips was preceded in death by her husband of 61 years, Clifton E. Phillips Sr., in 1998. She worked as the secretary for the family owned business, Phillips Land Surveying Company, until 1983. She resided on Waterman Street in Marietta for over 60 years until her death. She loved working in the yard and planting flowers. Survivors include sons, Clifton E. Phillips Jr. and Ronald B. Phillips and wife Jacquelyn; grandchildren, Donna Phillips Query and husband Bill, Matthew H. Phillips and wife Terri, Brian E. Phillips and wife Anne; great-grandchildren, Dorothy Query, Will Query, James Phillips, Ronald D. Phillips and Dewitt Shartzer and many nieces and nephews. Funeral Services will be held 11:00 a.m. Wednesday at Mayes Ward-Dobbins Funeral Home and Crematory in Marietta. Interment will be in Kennesaw Memorial Park Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, Mrs. Phillips can be remembered by contributions to the East Cobb United Methodist Church or the Marietta Camp Meeting. Family will receive friends 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. Tuesday at the Funeral Home.
