Featured artists are all local organists from Marietta including Helen Weiss Phelps, director of music ministries and organist at the Lutheran Church of the Resurrection; Arie Motschman, associate director of music and organist at First United Methodist Church of Marietta; and Dr. Calvert Johnson, organist at the First Presbyterian Church of Marietta and professor emeritus of music at Agnes Scott College.
All concerts are free and open to the public.
Polk Street Players announces open, non-equity auditions for “Rex’s Exes” by Jessie Jones, Nicholas Hope and Jamie Wooten. This sidesplitting redneck comedy is the sequel to “Red Velvet Cake War,” which Polk Street Players staged last fall to rave reviews.
Auditions are June 10 and 11 from 7 to 9 p.m. at St. James’ Episcopal Church. Parking is available off Polk Street behind the church. Enter through the courtyard facing the railroad crossing and follow signs. Casting is seeking two men ages 40 to 50, one man age 70 to 80, seven women age 40 to 50 and one woman age 60 to 70. Break out your cowboy or cowgirl hats and your best boots and join the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute for its “Wild, Wild West” summer social at the College of Continuing and Professional Education at Kennesaw State University on June 17 at 6 p.m.
The OLLI experience is geared toward adults 50 and older. Classes explore calligraphy, Tai Chi, watercolor, history and Facebook. Socials are conducted throughout the year just for this special group. Nearly 250 people come out to listen to live music, meet new people and have a good time.
The Society Express Band will provide the soundtrack to this summer’s social. Participants are encouraged to dress in their best western gear. A prize will be awarded for the best costume.
Attendees can also bring pop tabs to donate to the Ronald McDonald House Charities. The pop tabs collected help families of children that are ill.
The cost of the social is $10 per person and includes dancing, a catered dinner and an opportunity to make new friends while catching up with old ones. Payment is required in advance. Doors open at 5:45 p.m. and dinner is served from 6 to 7 p.m. Dancing will be from 6 to 9 p.m. Reservations are required and parking is plentiful.
