ATLANTA — Georgia tea party activists protested the targeting of conservative groups by the Internal Revenue Service with a rally Tuesday on the steps of the Capitol, calling for an investigation and tax reform to limit the scope of the federal agency.

The event was one of several across the country. IRS officials have acknowledged that some conservative groups received inappropriate attention and questioning in recent years as they applied for tax-exempt status.

In Atlanta, about 200 activists carried homemade signs that read “Abolish the IRS” and “Audit the IRS, Not the Tea Party.” Several speakers addressed the crowd including Gov. Nathan Deal, who said “you don’t have anything to worry about on the state level.”

“We are not going to audit your tax returns nor anything else with regard to our power to tax, based on who you voted for or your political beliefs,” Deal said to big applause.

Other speakers included former U.S. Rep. Bob Barr, a Republican running for Congress in Georgia’s 11th District, and Karen Handel, a former secretary of state, who is running as a Republican for Georgia’s open U.S. Senate seat.

“We’re here today to protest a government that is out of control and repressive and targeting regular Americans because of their beliefs,” said Julianne Thompson with the Georgia Republican Assembly, an event organizer.

Debbie Dooley with the Woodstock-based Tea Party Patriots said the extra scrutiny cost her group at least $250,000 in legal fees. She said the IRS wanted the group’s donor list, volunteer names, emails and copies of supporters’ comments on Facebook.

“My message to America is to wake up,” Dooley said. “If this can happen to us, and you sit back and do nothing ... sooner or later they’re going to come after you and who will stand up and fight for you?”

President Barack Obama’s administration has said no senior officials were involved in targeting conservative groups. Congressional hearings have been called to look into the issue.

People have ALWAYS disliked the IRS, and thought they were singled out, so what? The Bush IRS probably did the same or worse, so what? Every administration had embassies bombed and people killed.

Did Bush get blamed for 9/11? His badministration was DEFINITELY NEGLIGENT.

The BIG difference is that conservatives cry and whine and point fingers like little babies.

They can't find any REAL issues with Obama--Remember REAL issues: Like starting a war in Iraq and getting thousands killed for NOTHING! You know, REAL issues like the worst economy we've ever had. You know, REAL issues like destroying the "Freedom of Information" act?

DO YOU REMEMBER REAL ISSUES GOP?

To Middleton, Repub & Sam Adams: I just love winding you guys up good an tight. You can stand behind GWB and his criminal gang if you like, but please keep in mind. You were not barking at the moon when Iraq was invaded based on lies, more lies and compounded lies. That invasion cost thousands and thousands of American lives and tens of thousands of innocent Iraqi lives, but that's ok with you three, just as long as it was a GOP invasion.

BTW Middleton, please take "repub" to task over his/her anonymity, that way you won't be such a hypocrite.

President Obama was born in the US, he has provided his long form birth certificate. Not good enough for you, then conduct your own investigation. Did you two ask George for proof of where he went to school and who paid for it? Naaah!

Sarah Palin also deserved what she received, Bristol did not. Romney voluntarily stepped into the spotlight again and he hung a sign on his back asking to be kicked because of his stupidity. BTW, Palin and Mittens lost big! Enjoy the next 3 plus years.

Note to Ms. Dooley - We would love to see the evidence to your claim that TPP paid "at least" $250,000 in legal fees and proof that the IRS wanted your donor list, volunteer names, emails and copies of supporters’ comments on Facebook.

We've been seeing a lot of these claims in news reports from around the country and they are all eerily similar in wording. Could it be they're from a script provided by FreedomWorks?

So will the Republicans finally go to a national sales tax and demand the government lives within 9% of GDP. Just think of all the money that could be saved by getting rid of the Nazis at the IRS. They are even going to get bigger with Czar Obama care. You haven’t seen fraud yet like you will once the medical records are stolen and combo tax fraud and Medicare fraud; there’s no pin numbers in place you just file in cyberspace and collect the money. Hope the Republicans will do something to bring all us X-Republicans back to the party because it’s almost over for them!!

The TP is an insignificant group which will one day be nothing more than a footnote in our political history. I will remind all, the TP is the same group who carried signs depicting our president in the most racist of terms. This group backed the Birther movement. This group called for the president to furnish proof of his education. This group has held up the business of our country by holding 37 congreesional votes involving The Affordable Care Act. This group spat upon Emanuel Cleaver. This group made disgusting remarks involving the moral character of Presidnt Obama's mother.

They compalin about harsh treatment by the IRS. HA! They get what they deserve.

Lib, this group is made up of great Americans, who tell the truth and protest the growing statism and Marxism that Obama holds dear.

Birther movement? We have a right to know if our president was born in America or not. We have a right to know about his college years, his background. Who paid for his education? Do you know or care? Of course not. As long as he's redistributing the wealth and creating a massive, repressive, corrupt, lying government....destroying all that is good in America, that's what you care about. The TEA Party holds American ideals and American exceptionalism and individual rights and freedoms higher than any one "messiah." The moral character of Obama's mother has nothing to do with it. Just because she and her entire family were card-carrying, hard line communists and super hypocrits who benefitted from our nation's capitalism and freedom, has nothing to do with the TEA Party. Obama's mama was a communist lackey, and so is Obama. The TEA Party is stronger than ever, and will save our country one day, despite leftist efforts to diminish it.

Dept. of Homeland security put helicopters in the air and had armed agents deployed at these protests. Did Obama have those intimidating elements deployed during the crime-ridden Occupy protests? Heck no.

The persecution of the TEA parties continues, as news organizations trying to report the facts are targeted by Holder and Obama. James Rosen, with FOX, told us yesterday even his PARENTS' phone records were gotten by Holder's justice dept. If that's not a breach of his constitutional rights, I'm not sure what is. You can make fun of the TEA Party all you want, but you should really stop focusing on Americans' rights to gather and protest and focus a bit more on your rogue president and how he's eroding our rights in a way none have since the founding of our country. Vindictive, corrupt, twisted and now desperate, Obama is the worst president ever.

It is you, who or whatever you are, that is a footnote in history. Your constant blathering and insults are jevenile. You have the audacity to complain about the way people talk about the Kenyan in the White House, but fail to mention the nasty, degrading remarks your kind made about Sarah Palin and her entire family including her

younger teenage daughter. Or the battle of slurs and innuendos you waged against Romney, based on his religion.

You say the Tea Party deserves to be singled out and illegally harassed. That remark alone marks you as a traitor. If you think it is okay for the government to abuse its power to the detriment of any group of citizens, then you do not even

begin to understand what freedom is about.

You proabbly thought it was okay to leave the four Americans to die at Benghazi. After all, they were only "bumps inthe road,"

You need to grow up, or shut up.

Sam: Great Americans don't spit on people. Great Americans don't hold up signs of our president depicting him in the most racist of terms. Great Americans don't call the president a liar about his birth. Great Americans don't question the moral character of anyone's mother.

That's all fine with you. Great Americans, HA!
