A 30-year-old man and his girlfriend stabbed and choked his grandfather to death, then rode around metro Atlanta with the elderly man’s body in the back of a pickup truck, police say.

They stopped at a Wal-Mart, according to reports, and eventually left the truck at their home in south Cobb.

Casey Ryan Collins and 23-year-old Sarah Elizabeth Cook, both of Mableton, were arrested Tuesday night and charged with the murder of Edward Smith of Lilburn.

The 78-year-old grandfather was found dead inside his white 1997 Ford truck Tuesday about 9 a.m., according to the warrants. The truck was parked at the residence of the two suspects in the 300 block of Kemolay Road in south Cobb County.

“The investigation revealed that Casey Collins and Sarah Cook were the last people to have contact with Smith,” the warrant states.

Police say Cook admitted to them that she and Collins were responsible for Smith’s death and that after they assaulted him in his truck last Thursday morning, she stabbed Smith twice in the chest with a knife while Collins used a belt to choke his grandfather.

After Smith had died, police say Collins removed the wallet, from his grandfather’s pocket, which contained money and credit cards. The pair then drove Smith’s truck around metro Atlanta for “several hours” while the grandfather’s body was concealed inside.

They eventually abandoned Smith’s truck back at their residence in south Cobb but did not remove the body.

Sgt. Dana Pierce with Cobb Police said Smith’s family contacted local police on Sunday to report that they had not heard from him since Thursday.

“Apparently they kept in fairly close touch with him,” Pierce said, adding that the family didn’t indicate they believed their loved one was in danger at that time.

Police began their investigation and were eventually made aware that the grandfather’s body was discovered at the home off Kemolay Road.

Pierce wouldn’t say who reported finding Smith’s body.

The couple are both being held in the county jail without a bond.

Collins has a probation violation hold from a May 21 warrant.

According to Cobb Clerk of Court records, Collins and Cook were arrested and accused of simple battery, false swearing and possession of drugs in 2012. Cook’s record also shows an arrest for two counts of theft by receiving in 2009.

First these folks need the death penalty, but before that the guy needs to be castrated while he is held down with a belt around his neck and she needs to just be hung by the same belt she choked the man with. Swift, brutal justice may reduce these crimes

They don't look like Illegals. D.A. King told me all the crime comes from illegals. They look like white folk! U.S. Citizens, even!

Well since we are a nation of immigrants, I suppose the D.A. King crowd can at least pray that grandpa was an Illegal. Everybody's got an Illegal in the grapevine somewhere, so chances are fair to middling!
