The council voted Monday to waive residential development costs on about six properties throughout the city, said City Administrator Eric Taylor.
Smyrna regularly offers incentives to spur industrial and economic development, he said, but there are not any in place for residential properties.
“We’re looking for a way to get these projects moving,” Taylor said. “We need to spur interest in those properties and get them off the books.”
The developments were all zoned residential before 2009, Taylor said, and have become dormant since the nationwide economic crash. offered to take over to complete the project associated with Village Walk subdivision. Most of the residential developments either stalled or fell into foreclosure at various stages of construction.
The incentives can vary, Taylor said, based on the conditions and sizes of each property, but all will include waiving residential development costs. The new ordinance allows the city council to waive up to 50 percent of the development costs.

Alive & abundant?
Absolutely nothing to back that logo.
No new resturants, no new businesses, no quality development interested in coming here.
There is a good reason some of the areas along 285 want to change from a Smyrna address & zipcode to Vining's 30339. Vining's IS a prestige address, Smyrna not.
and 4th Ward Atlanta. We sense you are already
there. Why not move the rest of your self on over to Decatur before you die in Smyrna, that would be ludicrous to live & die in Smyrna!!!!!
I know we are all eager for the city to rid itself of foreclosure property, but we do have to live with the consequences of what is built on that land.
If you believe that developers always build what is best for our community I disagree.
If you not believe in the concepts of planned development and zoning, then we disagree.
Zoning is not communism. It is citizens protecting their community's future and protecting their property values and quality of life.
I still see no evidence for $200,000 homes or homes of any price based on the article cited in these comments. Is it speculation or do you have some source for these prices?

City approved yet another run of the mill townhome community w/ a 200,000 price point. And this is the HEART of downtown Smyrna?
Begging ANYONE to just build ANYTHING is not a very good downtown , economic plan for a better future.
This continued type of development LOWERS land value throughout Smyrna.
Problem is- there is no-one in Smyrna government that understands the concept of building a MODERN, EDUCATED, MINDFUL, WALKABLE, ENVIRONMENTAL friendly city.
Lightpole banners that boast 'alive & abundant', are merely hopeful propaganda..
Look at what Woodstock Downtown is doing. Homes & townhomes surrounding downtown range from mid 200's up to 500's. They're all built w/ lush, landscaped paths & outdoor spaces, welcoming everyone to participate in the community.
Even the new Woodstock West by Walton Apartments was built as PART of a connected community.
Resturants & businesses are opening every week there!! Same for Suwanee, Duluth & Chamblee. Fun, trendy architecture.
Look along the Beltline. See innovative style like Misty Ridge Hill & Sky Hill townhomes. All kinds of liveable neighborhoods, condos , lofts and apartments in Inman Park, 4th Ward and connecting to Decatur.
Why does Smyrna keep chasing such a tired, outdated city model,.. that obviously is not working?
