On the night of the SPLOST IV election, Marietta City Schools Board held its monthly regular meeting to learn more about its Performance Learning Center.

Tammie Roach, who oversees the 9-year-old program, said the PLC initially assisted in graduating six students, but last spring, 100 students were helped.

The Center offers help to students who begin their junior years shy of credits needed to graduate on time; fifth-year students; those who were absent from school for a variety of reasons including illness and need to catch up; transfer students; or those who simply chose to attend because they may not fit into a traditional high school setting.

Maximum enrollment for full-time students is 105, and for the after-school program, it is 70.

Roach said there is a wait list each semester of 10 to 15 students. PLC offers small classes for students, extended class days, Saturday school, a self-paced curriculum and dual enrollment with Chattahoochee Technical College.

Students participating in dual enrollment are able to earn college credits and high school graduation credits at the same time. Also, 27 classes offered at Chattahoochee Tech are transferable into other University System of Georgia colleges and universities, so students who may not go on to attend a technical school are able to get a kick-start on their post-secondary education.

In other business on Tuesday, the board unanimously approved:

• Four separate contracts valued at almost $300,000 for roof repairs at Dunleith and Lockheed elementary schools.

• A $229,500 contract to buy 300 DELL laptops with three-year warranties, as well as 12 laptop carts for Marietta Sixth Grade Academy.

• A $30,289.70 contract to buy 51 mini iPads, a MacBook Pro computer, AppleCare insurance, a volume purchasing voucher and six charging stations and training for Hickory Hills Elementary School.

• A $27,020 agreement to replace the district’s web host SchoolFusion with a program called SchoolWires.

• A $17,417 contract to purchase student agendas for all sixth through 12th graders.

• Qualifying dates and fees for the board’s Nov. 5 election.

• Moving forward with building a covered overhang in the pick-up areas at Marietta Center for Advanced Academics, pending approval of SPLOST IV.
