Of the 18 students invited to the PAGE STAR program at Windermere Golf Club in Cumming on Friday, three of the seven winners in Region 3A were from Cobb.
Andrea Cooper and Campbell High Spanish teacher Melyn Roberson; Alex Wu and Walton High biology teacher Dr. Tina Link; and Catherin Niu and Walton High English teacher Kelly Bryan were all selected to move on to the state competition on April 29 in Atlanta.
“The seven that advanced to the state all had perfect scores,” said Curt Spinney with the Metro Marietta Kiwanis Club.
His organization is the local STAR sponsor and he attended Friday’s luncheon with the students, their teachers and families.
“When they announced who the winners were, the kids were all pretty humble, but you could kind of tell that they were holding their excitement in,” he said.
The Professional Association of Georgia Educators’ Students Teacher Achievement Recognition program, now in its 55th year, is sponsored by the PAGE Foundation, the Georgia Chamber of Commerce and the Georgia Department of Education.
To obtain the STAR nomination, high school seniors must have the highest score on one test date on the three-part SAT and be in the top 10 percent or top 10 students of their class based on grade point average.
