There has been an increase in theft from people’s garbage cans, which led to the creation of an “anti-scavenging” ordinance.
Lt. Craig Graydon of the Kennesaw Police Department said the ordinance is designed to deter some of the metal theft issues in the city, inspired by a 23-year-old Acworth man who was stealing scrap metal to pay his rent. Metal is the nuisance item people are taking, Graydon said.
If convicted under the new law the council will consider tonight, offenders could face up to six months in jail, $1,000 in fines and 60 days of community service.
The council also will consider adjusting the police department’s budget to reduce the amount of vehicles and use the funds for uniforms for new officers.
Council members also will accept the annual budget through Sept. 30, 2012, from Mauldin and Jenkins LLC.
The meeting is at 6 p.m. at Kennesaw City Hall.
