Prep Roundup: Header leads Lassiter to late victory

Alex Champion’s header off Clay Dimick’s free kick proved to be the difference as Lassiter beat Mill Creek 2-1 Tuesday for a non-region victory.

After a scoreless first half, Justin Black got Lassiter on the board first with a goal that was assisted by Will Stubbs.

Mill Creek tied the game midway through the half, but the Trojans retook the lead 4 minutes later on Champion’s game winner.

Kell 2, Sequoyah 0: Will Cullom scored two goals to lead the Longhorns to a Region 7AAAAA victory.

Nicolas Burbano and Marco Zuniga each had an assist.

Josue Compean made four saves to earn the shutout in goal.

Marietta 2, Campbell 1: Will Nelson accounted for both goals, including the game-winner with roughly 15 minutes left in the game.

With the score knotted at 1-all, Nelson scored the game-winner. It came on a breakaway at the lefthand side of the field before he cut inside into the penalty box. His first goal was scored on a similar play, only he was on the righthand side.

Only five shots were taken between the two teams with Marietta taking three of them.

Campbell scored the equalizer in the second half on a free kick.

Pope 1, North Springs 0: Colin Huber assisted on Josh Ziskend’s first half goal and the margin stood up for the remainder of the match, giving Pope the Region 7AAAAA home win.

Sean Hatcher stopped two shots for Pope.

Mount Paran Christian 5, Christian Heritage 0: Jay Dayton netted a hat trick for Mount Paran, which led 2-0 at halftime en route to an Area 7A road win.

Alex Gernatt and Stephen Craig each had one goal. Goalkeeper Chance Hogan had three saves and assisted on one of Dayton’s second half scores.

Kennesaw Mountain 3, Hillgrove 0: Kennesaw Mountain blanked Hillgrove in a Region 4AAAAAA match at home.

Ja’Cobi McMahon recorded a goal and an assist for the Mustangs (4-2, 1-0), who led 3-0 at halftime.

Alejandro DelAngel

and Felipe Silva each had one score.

Taylor Cotton registered the shutout with three saves.


Lassiter 2, Mill Creek 1:
Lassiter stunned No. 2-ranked Mill Creek at home behind goals from Marriam Elfakahany and Ally Palazzone.

Elfakahany scored in the 22nd minute of the first half to put Lassiter on the board when she scored off of a Brittany Rooker corner kick.

The Lady Trojans struck again for a 2-0 lead early in the second half when Palazzone when she crushed one from 35 yards out.

Although Mill Creek scored late, Lassiter’s defense held off the Lady Hawks.

Shannon DeSantis made roughly five saves at goal with most coming in the second half.

Kell 3, Sequoyah 1: Three different players scored for Kell, which outshot Sequoyah 17-4 in taking the Region 7AAAAA road win.

Elyse Vongdara assisted on Tracey Webster’s first half goal as the Lady Longhorns (3-3, 1-1) led 1-0. Kelsey Wood had a second half score as did Hailey Hendrickson off an assist from Abby Mangum.

Savannah Corr had three saves for Kell.

Mount Paran Christian 6, Christian Heritage 0: Charlotte Dayton netted two goals for the Lady Eagles in the Area 7A road victory.

Alex Reed, Rachel VanHorn and Renee VanHorn each had one goal. Mount Paran (2-1, 2-0) also had an own goal.

Goalkeepers Katie Sweeney and Courtney Mckenzie combined on the shut out.

Hillgrove 3, Kennesaw Mountain 1: Three players scored as the Lady Hawks won the Region 4AAAAAA road game.

Sydney A. Clark, Rachel Palazzo and Necee Jennings provided the goals, with Emma Davison assisting on Palazzo’s score.

Breanne Dykes saved three of the four shots she faced for Hillgrove.

Harrison 5, Peachtree Ridge 1: Monica Herrera and Treva Aycock each scored two goals as the eighth-ranked Lady Hoyas won the non-region road game.

Carly Rich also scored for Harrison (4-1).


Dominion Christian 16, Greater Gwinnett 6 (6 inn.): The Knights scored eight runs in the third and six more in the sixth to roll to a victory.

Nick Carr, Riley Howard and Luke Lewallen each went 2-for-5 with a double and two RBIs to lead the way. Andrew Giles went 3-for-4 and Howard pitched three innings, allowing three hits to earn the win.


Kell 22, Cherokee 3:
Riki Kujanpaa and Alex Llerandi each netted five goals as Kell dominated Cherokee in a non-area match at home.

Alex Jamarillo had four scores for the Longhorns, while Damien Prosser and Zach Van Kauwenberg each had two goals. Four other players each had one score.

Avery Brown picked up the win in net for Kell.

Northview 12, Pope 6: The Greyhounds couldn’t come back from a six-goal halftime deficit and lost the non-area road game.

Tyler Borko and Cody Poliska each had a goal and an assist, while Parker Lavelle and Liam Lynch also had goals.

Sam Rose saved 15 shots for Pope (1-3).


Harrison 9, Kennesaw Mountain 7 (OT):
Jessica Williams and Taylor Sutton each scored goals in overtime to lift the Lady Hoyas to a win in their Area 1AAAAAA opener.

Harrison led 6-3 at half, but Kennesaw Mountain went on a 4-1 run and tied the game with 6:30 to play to send the game to overtime.

Sutton, Williams and Merrick Laughridge each scored two goals. Alexis Gray stopped 15 shots in goal.

Caitlyn Farmer led the Lady Mustangs with four Walton 12, Centennial 12: Sophia Watkins scored with 3 seconds left in regulation, lifting the Lady Raiders to a draw in the non-area game at Raider Valley.

Erin McBride and Carly White each had four goals for Walton (2-2-1). Annie Poling had two and Meaghan Butler one.

Kathryn Sweeden and Emily James split goalkeeping duties, saving a total of four shots for the Lady Raiders.
