Mrs. Meriam McCollough Shelnutt, 82, of Newnan, passed away March 1, 2013. On November 10, 1930 she was born in Woodbine, GA to the late Tom and Hilda Wright McCollough. In 1951 she graduated from Georgia State College for Women with a Bachelor of Science Degree. She was an active member of Newnan First United Methodist Church and the Veatch-Nixon Sunday School Class. She was also active in the Women’s Circle at the church. She had a deep love for family, flowers, gardening, cooking, and entertaining guests. She was a devoted Methodist minister’s wife, and a loving mother and grandmother. She is survived by her husband of 60 years, Rev. Fred Shelnutt, also of Newnan; sons, Gentry Shelnutt and his wife Rana, of Marietta, Stephen D. Shelnutt and his wife Sandra, of St. Simons Island; sisters, Patricia Flynt, of Union Point, Eugenia Laurence, of Deltona, FL; brother, Rev. Jack McCollough, of Woodbine; grandchildren, Meriam Blevin Shelnutt, of Brooklyn, NY, Genna Claire Shelnutt, of Charleston, SC, Stephen Dale Shelnutt, Jr., of St. Simons Island, Laura Sue Shelnutt Kennedy and her husband Franklin, of Cumming, Leslie Meriam Shelnutt, of Athens, and numerous nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held 2 o’clock Sunday, March 3, 2013 at Newnan First United Methodist Church with Rev. Med Roach, Rev. Gary Parrish, and Rev. Jack McCollough officiating. Interment will follow at Powder Springs Cemetery. The family will receive friends Saturday evening from 6:00PM until 8:00PM at McKoon Funeral Home, 38 Jackson St. Newnan GA 30263, 770-253-4580.
