Prep Roundup: Ten-run inning lifts Walton past Pope

Walton scored 10 runs in the fourth inning to erase a three-run deficit and defeat east Cobb rival Pope 15-4 on Wednesday.

Stephen Wrenn, who went 2-for-3, had the big blast in the fourth with a grand slam.

Henry Rowling went 3-for-3 with a double, solo home run and drove in three. Avery Roberts and Logan Barnett each had a pair of hits and Chase Burkes added a double and an RBI.

Bradley Schwartz earned his second victory of the season pitching four innings, allowing four hits and one earned run while striking out six.

Patrick Weisman led Pope with a hit and two RBIs and Harrison Siegal added a hit and drove in one.

Walton (5-0) will host Mountain View today.

Mount Paran Christian 12, Cherokee 1 (6 inn.): Isaac Phillips went 3-for-4 with three RBIs to lead the Eagles to a non-region win over the Class AAAAAA Warriors.

Matt McKenzie was 3-for-4, Jake Palomaki and Will Schnure each had two hits, Taylor Trammell had a hit and three RBIs and Tyler Flowers added a hit and drove in two.

Robert Wilson earned the win pitching four innings of one-hit baseball.

Mount Paran Christian (2-0) will host Whitefield Academy on Friday.

Whitefield 10, Pace Academy 6 (5 inn.): The Wolfpack scored eight runs in the first inning and cruised to a five-inning victory.

Sam Perley was 2-for-3 and drove in two. Matt Olsen added two hits in the win.

Whitefield Academy (2-1) will travel to Mount Paran on Friday.

South Cobb 6, Stephenson 5: Deion Law had a leadoff double in the bottom of the seventh and scored on a wild pitch to give the Eagles a non-region win.

South Cobb managed to win, despite having three hits. The Eagles scored four times in the first inning without getting a hit. They had two walks and bunted three times to get on base.

Khuram Khan pitched in relief, going 4 2/3 innings and giving up two hits and one run to get the win.

South Cobb (3-0) will host Hiram today.

Lassiter 13, Westminster 0: The Trojans scored four runs in the fifth and five runs in the seventh to break the game open.

They also took advantage of five Westminster errors.

Cornell Nixon was 1-for-3 with a double and two RBIs. Will Anderson was 3-for-3 with an RBI.

Cornell’s two-run double in the fifth broke the game open. Patrick Holmes had a two-run single in the seventh.

Lassiter pitching held the Wildcats to just one hit. Tim Eber went five innings with three strikeouts and one hit. K.J. Sinclair threw the sixth and seventh and faced the minimum.

Lassiter (2-0) will host Cartersville today.

Fayette County 5, Walker 3: Fayette County scored four runs in the bottom of the second to take the lead and the Wolverines were unable to rally.

Fayette County’s three-run home run with two outs sparked the second inning.

Kevin Bray and James Pittinger had doubles for Walker. Cameron Bloebaum also had a hit.

Walker will host North Cobb Christian today to open Region 6A play.

Allatoona 8, Berkmar 3: The Buccaneers put up a four-spot in the fourth inning to take command in its non-region game over Berkmar. Andrew Fousch hit a two-run home run to spark the inning.

Bradley Lewis was 2-for-3 with a double and RBI, and Clarke Schmidt was 2-for-3 with two runs scored.

Freshman Grayson Harbin pitched five innings and gave up two hits, no earned runs while striking out nine.

Allatoona (1-0) will play at Campbell today.

Alpharetta 8, Harrison 2: Tony Flores hit a triple in the first inning and scored on a wild pitch, and Austin Kuchinski hit a solo home run in the sixth.

But Alpharetta scored seven of its eight runs in between to hand the Hoyas the loss.

Harrison gave up three walks in the first inning which led to Alpharetta scoring three runs, and the Raiders added two more in the second and third innings.

Harrison (1-1) will play Milton at home Friday.

BOYS TENNIS

Marietta 5, Sprayberry 0: Zachary Garrison won his No. 1 singles match 6-2, 6-0 to help lead the Blue Devils past the Yellow Jackets in non-region play.

David Ho won 6-4, 6-3 and Marcus Brito 6-3, 7-6 to complete the singles sweep while Jacob Pope and Jay Buxton won their doubles match 6-0, 6-0. Sprayberry forfeited the fifth match.

Walker 4, Lovett 1: Derrick Brown and Alan Norsworthy won their singles matches but each needed a super tie-breaker to help the Wolverines to a season-opening victory.

Brown won 6-3, 4-6 10-6, Norsworthy came out on top 3-6, 7-6, 10-7 and Austin Newsome won

6-3, 6-1 to complete the singles sweep.

Will Chocallo and Daniel Sosnovsky won 6-1, 6-0 in doubles.

Walker (1-0) will travel to Pace Academy today.

Whitefield 5, Our Lady of Mercy 0: The Wolfpack dropped a combined six games in their sweep of Our Lady of Mercy.

Matthew Landry won 8-1, Bennett Shilling 8-3 and David Lemasters 8-1 to sweep singles play.

Justin Samples and Harris Reed won 8-1 while Stephen Bracher and Jay DeShong won 8-0 in doubles.

GIRLS TENNIS

Whitefield 4, Our Lady of Mercy 1: Rachel Hicks and Kerry Anna Lemasters each won singles matches to lead the Lady Wolfpack to a win.

Hicks won 8-0 and Lemasters prevailed 8-5.

Caroline Holliday and Megan Schwarzkopf rolled to an 8-0 win and Caroline Langella and Colleen Cosey won 8-2 in doubles.

Allatoona 5, Villa Rica 0: Kennedy Craig had a minor struggle before closing out her No. 1 singles match 6-0, 6-3. Everyone else in the Allatoona lineup prevailed 6-0, 6-0 in its Region 5AAAAA opener.

Allatoona will host Paulding County today.

GIRLS SOCCER

Holy Innocents 6, Walker 2: The Lady Wolverines got down early and could not work their way back into the game.

Lauren Brock and Elizabeth Ouellette each had goals in the second half, and Brock added an assist.

Walker (1-1) will travel to Wesleyan on Friday.

Wheeler 0, North Paulding 0: Lauren Bramlett made seven save, including two of the spectacular variety to help the Lady Wildcats earn a tie.

North Paulding outshot Wheeler by a wide margin, but Bramlett and the Lady Wildcats defense proved to be the difference.

Wheeler (0-2-1) will host Mountain View on Friday.

GIRLS LACROSSE

Sprayberry 16, M.L. King 0: Katie Tokos led the Lady Yellow Jackets with six goals in their lopsided win.

Jennie Racher, Gaby Lohner, Ashley Russo and Taylor McGhee all scored two each, and Abby Stolz and Sam Popham also added goals.

Lohner finished with two assists and Tokos had one.

Sprayberry (2-2) accounted for most of its scoring in the first half, taking a 12-0 lead at the break.

Sprayberry will play at Riverwood on Monday.

Kell 13, Harrison 6: Haley Swift had four goals and two assists to lead the Lady Longhorns to a non-region win. Her sister Emily and Katie Kumberger tacked on three goals each, and Leslie Ferguson, Sarah Bilecki and Hannah Nemeck had one each.

Kell took an 8-5 lead and held Harrison to one goal in the second half.

Kell (2-0) will play at Chattahoochee on Monday.

BOYS GOLF

Kell 156, Lassiter 179: Mark Decoster was the low medalist with a 36 for Kell. Matthew Hines was right behind him with a 37 and Chandler Mackey finished with a 44.

For Lassiter, Max Weyrick shot 37.

Kell will next play in the Johnny Paulk Tournament in Jekyll Island.
