LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. — The Marietta Daily Journal’s high school football preview issue was honored as one of the best in the country.

The 92-page “Kickoff 2012” earned a national top-10 award for all papers in the 30,000-and-under circulation category during the annual Associated Press Sports Editors national judging convention this week in Lake Buena Vista, Fla.

“Constructing the annual preview section is a lot of work, but we feel like it is worth it considering the level of high school football that is played in Cobb County each season,” Journal sports editor John Bednarowski said. “In the end, we hope that the readers like our efforts. It’s truly a full-staff, two-month project that we enjoy creating each summer.”

Contributing to “Kickoff 2012” were Bednarowski, assistant sports editor Eli Boorstein, sports writers Adam Carrington and Carlton D. White, former sports writers Greg Oshust and William Bretherton, and staff intern Eric Single.

The Journal sports staff was also given honorable mention as a top-20 newspaper for the daily sports section. It is the fifth straight year the Journal has earned national recognition from APSE for section quality.

Bednarowski also won a national top-10 writing award for beat coverage in high school sports. The entry included a group of five stories — a game story, a breaking-news story, an enterprise piece that demonstrates a trend and additional wild-card entries — that are used to determine a writer’s range ability to write in a variety of circumstances.

It was the first national writing award for Bednarowski and the second for the MDJ. Last year, Bretherton won in the breaking-news category.
