Margaret Chapman Spears Smith, a remarkable lady, dedicated Christian and devoted mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, went to be with our Lord, February 7, 2013. She was 94. Mrs. Smith was born on October 9, 1918 to Newell P. Chapman & Sara McClure Chapman in the Lost Mountain Community of Cobb County. She was the seventh of eight children and one of few women of the era to receive a higher education, graduating from Canton High School then North Georgia College in 1936. In 1938, Mrs. Smith married Edward P. “Eddie” Spears, who passed away in 1948. In 1961, she married Jerome N. “Jerry” Smith, who passed away in 1993. For many years, Mrs. Smith worked as office manager for Shamrock Knitting Mills in Marietta. She was an active volunteer, including years serving as a Pink Lady at Kennestone Hospital. Mrs. Smith’s greatest joys were always her family & her church. Her family included three children, nine grandchildren & thirteen great-grandchildren, as well as Jerome Smith’s two children, five grandchildren, twelve great-grandchildren & nine great great-grandchildren. Her church was St Stephen UMC on Roswell Street in Marietta of which she was a very active member for more than 70 years, beginning in 1938. At St. Stephen, Mrs. Smith participated in the Methodist Women’s Fellowship and the Cloe Hamby Circle. During their 32 years together, Margaret & Jerry Smith traveled extensively all across North America. They spent many years as members of a travel trailer group known as the Staygoners. Mrs. Smith will be most remembered for the love, devotion, encouragement and support she has shown family and friends throughout the years. Survivors include brother, Bill Chapman of Douglasville; children, Carol Spears Black of Marietta; Edward Spears and wife, Debbie, of Hilton Head; Janice Spears Marsengill and husband, Herbert, of Hilton Head; stepchildren, Gwen Smith Denney; Gail Smith Chivers and husband, Ronald Chivers; as well as a large extended family. Mom, Grandmother, Mama Gramps, Grandmama, Margaret, we love you and will miss you very much, but we will see you again!
