The Bells Ferry Foundation, established in mid-October after the school celebrated its golden anniversary, was formed to fund improvements to the school’s landscaping around a garden and along the front lawn sidewalk and flagpole.
Suzanne Mosley, a kindergarten parent who volunteered to co-chair the nonprofit foundation and brick campaign, said the foundation is reaching out to parents, students and alumni to see if they are interested in purchasing the bricks for $50 each.
“Our goal is to raise awareness for the Bells Ferry Foundation throughout the community, local businesses and alumni of Bells Ferry Elementary and to promote our fundraising efforts, which ultimately benefit our teachers and students,” she said.
Mosley said she hopes the project will allow the next 50 years to be as successful and meaningful to the community as the first.
Bells Ferry Principal Ladonna Starnes, a Bells Ferry alumna who has returned to the school as its leader for the past seven years, said money from the campaign should help the school to purchase document cameras for each classroom, hire a teacher for the computer lab and to help fund “The Leader in Me” project.
“The Leader in Me project is based on the work of Stephen Covey’s ‘Seven Habits of Highly Effective People’ and brings it down to the level of the elementary school students,” she said Thursday. “Preparing students to be strong in academics, strong in character, and strong in leadership skills prepares them to be strong for life.”
The 4-by-8-inch bricks are $50 each, and a replica brick, which can be kept as a donor’s personal keepsake, gift or addition to their landscaping at home, is $35.
Bricks can be personalized, up to three lines, 20 characters each, to record an alumnus name, honor classmates, acknowledge friends or family members, or to inscribe a personal message about his or her time at the school.
Mosley will place the first order for the bricks Feb. 15 and hopes to install them by the end of the school year. This project will be a fundraiser in which future Bells Ferry families can participate.
