MARIETTA — When Cobb County Sheriff’s Office deputies and investigators attempted to serve an arrest warrant at an east Cobb home early Monday morning, a man began firing shots at officers, leading to a three-hour standoff.

Michael Lee Lightsey, 40, remains in the Cobb County Jail without bond on two counts of felony terroristic threats and four counts of felony aggravated assault.

According to jail records, Lightsey was arrested Monday around 4:30 a.m. at his residence in the 400 block of Guilford Circle in Marietta.

The arrest warrant for Lightsey states that deputies with the sheriff’s office fugitive unit were attempting to execute a separate warrant for felony terroristic threats at his home when he confronted the officers with a rifle and “began firing upon the deputies from the second floor of the home.”

“The accused did tell Cobb County 911 dispatchers that he would fire upon any law enforcement officers that attempt to enter his home to arrest him at approximately 1:46 a.m.,” the warrant states.

A release from the Cobb Sheriff’s Office stated neighbors were vacated from their homes, and its Tactical Operations Unit and negotiation team were called to help.

“The negotiator was able to establish contact with Lightsey via cell phone,” said Col. Milton Beck with the sheriff’s office. “As a result of their conversation, Lightsey agreed to exit the residence through the front door and was taken into custody without incident (by 4:30 a.m.). A subsequent security sweep on the residence revealed Lightsey was alone in the home during the entire incident.”

Cobb County Police had filed an initial arrest warrant for Lightsey on Sunday. It stated that sometime between 5 and 8 p.m. on Saturday, Lightsey reportedly told a female victim at his home, “I’m going to kill you.”

She then called her parents, and they went to check on her at the house.

When the victim’s parents went into the home’s kitchen to talk to Lightsey about the incident, the warrant states that he said, “I’m going to … kill your daughter. I’m going to kill both of you, too.”

“When (victim’s father) asked again, ‘Are you serious? You’re going to kill us?’ the accused replied, ‘I will do it,’” the warrant states.

The victim’s mother then reportedly told Lightsey that she was going to contact police, and he replied with “Go ahead and call 911. When they come here they will find three bodies.”

The female victim then left the home with her child and went to her parent’s home “because she was afraid for her safety and the safety of her child,” the original warrant stated.
