The event lasts from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and costs $15 per person, which includes a coffee bar and lunch. Seating is limited to 400 people.
Deborah Ray, who is the Community Outreach Coordinator for SALT Ministries, which operates out of the women’s ministry, said that the purpose of the event is to “encourage people in this atmosphere of anxiety and fear to hear what the word of God says about trusting God in trouble and trial.”
“The idea came from the women’s ministry of Mt. Zion who wanted to provide encouragement and inspiration to the people of this community –— to start the New Year off in a new direction,” Ray said.
The event is run by Peggy Williamson, the lead chairperson of the Women’s Ministry. Participants will view video messages by Louie Giglio, the pastor at Atlanta’s Passion City Church.
Giglio recently made headlines when he withdrew from giving the benediction at President Barack Obama’s inauguration after comments he made in the past stirred some controversy.
Ray said that Giglio offers Christians information on dealing with depression based on a scriptural basis and his own past experiences.
“Pastor Giglio … has personally dealt with fear, panic attacks, depression in his own life and has put together a powerful video series of messages that we will show,” Ray said. “People are overwhelmed with a sense of helplessness and hopelessness these days –— many want to be rid of this fear and live with hope but don’t know how.”
Giglio and his church put on a passion conference that draws thousands of youth each year, she said.
Well-known local writer and Christian speaker Polly Balint will moderate the Retreat from Anxiety.
“We do women’s events each year, and they are open to everyone who wants to come. We won’t turn men away, either,” Ray said. “Primarily people close to our church attend, but there are many who come from the area.”
