Kennesaw man charged in accident that injured cop on I-75

ATLANTA – A Kennesaw man is charged in an accident that seriously injured an Atlanta Police officer. A 2011 Hyundai Sonata driven by Scott Eugene Welker, 45, collided with the police vehicle of Atlanta Police Officer Osbert Beckles, who was working traffic, at 11:25 p.m. Friday at an exit ramp at Interstate 75 and Northside Parkway, said Georgia State Patrol spokesman Gordy Wright.

Wright said Welker fled the scene of the accident on foot after the crash, but was taken into custody a short time later. Beckles was transported to Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta, while Welker was taken to Fulton County Jail, where he faces seven charges including driving under the influence. Wright said Welker also faces charges of serious injury by motor vehicle, leaving the scene of an accident, reckless driving, failure to maintain lane, improper turn or lane change and a seat belt violation.
