SMYRNA - The Cobb County Police Department’s S.T.E.P Unit is investigating a fatal crash that occurred on the ramp from westbound Interstate 285 to South Cobb Drive in Smyrna around 1:45 p.m. Thursday.

According to a release from Sgt. Dana Pierce with Cobb Police, the driver of a red and white 1998 Link Belt HTC8670 crane truck, who has been identified as 37-year-old Brian D. Maddox of Dallas, was stopped in traffic on the exit ramp waiting to turn left onto South Cobb Drive for "reasons unknown" when the driver of a black 2012 Chevrolet Cruze struck the vehicle from behind.

After hitting the crane truck, the driver of the Chevrolet, identified as 42-year-old Sylvester Johnson of Buford, rolled backwards down the ramp towards the southbound flow of I-285 traffic.

Prior to entering the interstate, Johnson's vehicle came to a stop after rolling down the embankment between the interstate and the ramp. He was taken by ambulance to Emory Adventist Hospital in Smyrna where he was pronounced dead.

Three juvenile passengers inside the vehicle and Maddox were not injured.

The release also states that investigators do not expect to file charges in this case and anyone with information about it is asked to call 770-499-3987.
