Austell, Ga. - A 13-year-old mother is facing murder charges after the death of her new born child. The baby was found in the woods behind the girl's Mableton apartment.
Cobb police found the dead infant, which they say had been carried to term, inside a shoe box hidden under some leaves in the woods behind the Sierra Forest Apartments on Wednesday night.
They charged the teen mother who lives in the complex on Thursday. According to Cobb County Police Officer Mike Bowman, the teen faces adult counts of felony murder, first degree child cruelty and concealing a death. Police have not released the 13-year-old's name.
A neighbor who didn't want to be identified says her children go to middle school with the mother and 14-year-old father. The woman says kids in the community told her that the teen knew about the pregnancy, but that the girl's parents did not, saying the young teen was afraid to tell her parents.
The 14-year-old father doesn't face any charges at this time. The investigation continues, and an autopsy is scheduled to determine a cause of death. The neighbor was heartbroken about what happened.
"They're both good kids," said the neighbor.
Georgia is a "safe haven" state, which by law allows a mother to leave a newborn within seven days of birth at a fire station, a hospital, a clinic or a school nurse and not face any charges.

opinion; "understandable"? If so, I pity your students and family.
And what exactly does "American values" mean? Please educate me.
This is really sad. And another example of a baby being "charged as an adult".
The insanity/stupidity of police and prosecutors raises it's head again...all in the name of "gettin' tuff on da criminals".
Aside from that, is a 13 year old a kid or an adult? This crap of charging kids as adults depending on the nature of the crime and how much "I am tuff on crime " publicity it will get the prosecutors and the police from the numbskull sect is, well...for the numbskulls (who sadly often vote).
NOTE: I have clearly not indicated that a slap on the wrist was in order. Please work on that reading comprehension deficiency.

Are you saying that this 13-year old is a 'baby'? Your follow up post refers to her as a 'little girl'. Which one is she?!
Is she a scared 'teen'? Is she a 'young adult'? This 13-year old was certainly old enough to make the decision to have sex so I think we can both agree that she's no longer a 'baby' or a 'little girl.'
What brilliant idea do you have to curb this disgusting trend? Do you want to join up with Rich Pellegrino and Jerry Gonzalez and get goodies and handouts for all the babies being pumped out by teens and illegals, just to get thrust into the endless cycle of the road to nowhere? Taxpayers picking up their tab?
This baby deserved a chance at life but the 13-year old 'baby/little girl' you feel so sorry for, made a different decision, now didn't she? I can assure you that my parents certainly would've been astute enough to know that I was putting on weight in my belly. I can also assure you I would know if my own daughters were possibly pregnant and gotten them medical care.
People like you insist on enabling young criminals and you're not doing them any favors. Please tell me that you think there should be SOME ACCOUNTABILITY on her horrific decision.
