LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. (AP) — A Georgia county is purchasing the site of Fort Daniel, a frontier outpost that protected settlers during the War of 1812.
The Gwinnett County Commission on Tuesday approved a deal to buy the four-acre site along Braselton Highway on Hog Mountain, northeast of Atlanta.
"To be able to preserve that part of history will pay dividends for centuries to come," County Commissioner Mike Beaudreau told The Gwinnett Daily Post.
Workers with the Gwinnett Archaeological Research Society have unearthed the location of the walls and sifted through dirt for years to find artifacts at the site. Group members have urged county officials to make the purchase and created a Fort Daniel Frontier Faire to teach children and adults about the history and archaeology.
The site was purchased for $241,000. Gwinnett County Community Services Director Phil Hoskins said no decisions have been made on specific plans for the site, but the main goal will be to preserve it.
