MABLETON — Just like each of the past two years, South Cobb wrapped up its regular season with a 7-3 record.

But unlike the past, the Eagles won’t be making a playoff appearance.

South Cobb beat Pebblebrook 42-14 on Saturday afternoon in a game at Falcon Stadium that provided it with nothing more than bragging rights.

The Eagles (7-3, 5-3 Region 4AAAAAA) are instead left as the Cobb County team with the best record not going to the playoffs.

“At 7-3, you really want to be there,” South Cobb coach Ed Koester said, “but this is it for us. The guys fought really hard, and I’m proud of them.”

South Cobb began the season with five straight wins, but a loss to McEachern on Oct. 12 set the Eagles off on a string of three losses in four games that dropped them in the region standings.

With a 0-10 record under first-year coach Tommy Macon, Pebblebrook also ended its season. The Falcons, winless in eight region games, were dealt a few setbacks during the season, and Macon said his players did their best under the circumstances.

“We had some injuries early on and got out of it,” Macon said. “Once that happens, it can be hard to get on track.”

The class of South Cobb seniors won a total of 21 games during their varsity tenure. The last time an four-year class has been able to make that claim was the group of 2004-07, which won 25 games.

The current seniors — receivers Jeremiah Alphabet, Chris Simon and Ryan Sumner, running back Chauncey Ingram and quarterback Stephon Masha — made memorable plays in Saturday’s game, as did senior safety Jordan Horton.

Simon put the Eagles on the board in the first quarter with his touchdown reception. Ingram broke a 7-7 tie with his 37-yard run in the first half before Alphabet wrapped up the first half with a 32-yard reception for a touchdown and the 21-14 lead.

In the second half, it was Masha scoring on the ground from 4 yards out. Simon made it 35-7 with his 51-yard punt return before Sumner scampered 11 yards for another score.

Ingram’s first carry of the second half gave him more than 100 yards in the game and more than 1,000 on the season.

Koester said having a variety of players contribute has been a trait of his team throughout the season.

“When one guy is doing really great, it’s because another guy is doing him job right,” he said.

Pebblebrook’s Dezmond Huntley scored on an 8-yard quarterback keeper that made the score 42-14 before South Cobb ran the final 3:41 off the clock.

Macon said the Falcons came out strong and looked confident when the score was knotted 7-all, but when Harton’s interception led to a quick South Cobb score, and the deficit was suddenly 21-7, Pebblebrook’s morale never recovered.
