With a win tonight at Bobby Chappell Field over Gordon Lee in Chickamauga, Walker will set two records for the first time in program history.

The fifth-ranked Wolverines will earn their first region championship while simultaneously sealing their first undefeated regular season.

“It’s all pretty exciting and amazing,” Walker coach John East said. “The kids have been great. The coaching staff is great. We’ve just done a great job of taking it one game at a time.

“To get to this point is a little bit surreal. Certainly, a lot of people are surprised that we are at this point but it is what it is.”

During its last five Region 6A (B) contests, Walker has convincingly handled the majority of its competition and given up more than seven points just once.

“I think we are continuing to improve both offensively and defensively,” East said. “Our defense certainly has done a great job, then offensively we have a great running back.”

East is referring to senior Evan Kasian, who leads the county in rushing yards with 1,709.

“I think he’s absolutely one of the best I’ve seen in my career,” East said. “We have one man who is certainly pretty talented.”

Kasian will try to help the Wolverines (9-0 overall) win their third straight game in the series, while hoping not to repeat a 23-yard performance on 21 carries in last season’s 21-7 triumph.

Despite being held to just 136 yards on offense, Walker did force seven turnovers. But even if East was the coach last year, none of that would matter.

“I don’t worry about last year,” he said. “Just win the next game.”

As far as each team’s previous game, the Wolverines defeated Mount Paran Christian

20-3 on the road last Friday. Kasian, Bradley Moore and Cameron

Bloebaum both ran for touchdowns.

“I think the program is moving forward,” East said. “I don’t think we are just winning games for this year.”

Meanwhile, Goron Lee (5-4) lost its third straight contest, an 18-13 setback to Mount Zion-Carroll last Friday. The 13 points ended a two-game scoreless streak for the Trojans.

“They are a good football team,” East said. “A tough and hard-nosed football team. I saw them against Whitefield during our bye. They have a good-looking fullback and tailback.”

This will be the fifth meeting between Walker and Gordon Lee.

“There’s a lot at stake but we’ve done a good job of just taking it one game at a time,” East said.
